once upon a time i was a video game junkie...

I heard on NPR yesterday that the Super Mario Brothers were turning 25. **25!** Why does it seem like only yesterday my mom was bringing home one of these?:

Up until then, our biggest form of "on screen" entertainment would have been the Lite Brite.

In typical girlish fashion, I figured the gaming system was only for boys and left my brother to play it by himself. And then one day a few weeks later, I was home alone and happened to pick up one of those magical rectangular controllers, slipped in a little game called Super Mario Bros and I. was. hooked.

I played so much that I can remember reading books in school and swearing I could see the little animated Mario running between the lines and smashing upwards at the text. Then, I would be walking down the street and think "Hmmm....If I jumped up and hit my fist in the air, I wonder if a secret box would appear?"

Yeah...it was really that bad.

It only took a few months to master Mario Bros. before we moved on to Excite Bike, Tetris, Mike Tyson's Punch Out, Duck Hunt (if we were really bored), and then there was The Legend of Zelda that I actually spent two days of the 8th grade faking sick over so I could miss school and beat Ganon.

I never did have the same affinity for Super Mario 2. Number 3 made me dizzy. And frankly I stink at Super Mario Galaxy and MarioKart on our wii (either that or my kids are just insanely good.) Guess my video game glory days reside in two dimension.

There is for sure still a place in my heart for the little Italian brothers, though. It's something my kids and I have in common. And when I tell them it's time to turn the game off and they beg me to just give them a few more minutes to "beat this level"....How can I not?

Because I remember what it was like :)

Happy Birthday Mario and Luigi! You haven't aged a bit!

Oh, my 11 year old will be so excited to hear this news. She should have worn her I ♥ Mario shirt today, he truly has her heart.

Yep,I loved the old Mario too. We'd mute the tv and turn on Vanilla Ice full blast and rock Mario's world while groving to Ice Ice Baby. Good times.

Those were the days! When a neighbor kid got a Nintendo his/her house was THE destination for all neighborhood kids. Cort, Ryan & Josh Wilhelmsen and I spent many hours playing Mario Bros & Duck Hunt. Good Times! Thanks for the memory.

I didn't had the old stuff. We have a Wii now and I spent the better part of the last 2 weekends trying to beat it to get "Rosalina"...

I did it. Thank you very much.

Wii? That's that thing you stream movies from Netflix on, right?

Well, no, I do have some games for it, but they only seem to get pulled out when my kids are here for the summer.

Back in the day, I loved Excite Bike, but I never was any good at Mario.
