the confidence to pull it off

My 35th birthday is approaching rapidly. Seems unbelievable to me since I'm pretty certain I JUST turned 30....but a further indicator of how ridiculously fast time is going lately.

My super fun, spunky, creative friend and I decided to do an over-the-top co-birthday party this year. We went with a Lady Gaga style "Carnival of the Absurd" theme complete with adult friendly bounce house, a ride, cotton candy and snow cone machines, music, and......costumes. Yes--fabulous, surreal outfits were a MUST!

In searching for some inspiration, I came across this picture in O magazine:

THAT is Kelly Wearstler. I've been a huge fan of her decorating work for years. She designs amazing hotels and restaurants like this one:

And residential spaces that are modern and timeless at the same time:

But I guess I never paid attention to what a fashionista she was. So--I googled her and found a parade of amazing outfits....

ooooooh!!!

aaaaaah!!!

It really is a fabulous thing to be the age I am. If I would have tried to dress in any of those things she was wearing when I was 18 or even 25--no one would have taken me seriously. It would have looked like a girl playing dress up. But when you have the confidence in your face that comes from experience--that comes from knowing just who you are and what you want, suddenly you can put on the most elaborate clothes and jewelry and make it completely believable.

I have always been (mostly) happy with who I am. I've always had a style that's uniquely "me"--inside and out. I have never spent much money on fashion, but I keep my eyes open for good deals and keep old outfits looking fresh with inexpensive accessories (hooray for Forever 21!). I try new makeup and hair trends. And during this transitional part of my life, I have loved taking a few more risks with my appearance. If I ever think "I can't wear THAT!", I immediately answer myself "eh, why not? What the heck!"

It's a pretty cool feeling :)

And while you may never see THIS around the Peterson house....

I can't wait to show you what I will be wearing come birthday day, handmade from this pile of fabulous.....

Fur, tulle, ribbons, leather....and imagination :)

What's something YOU do to keep your look fresh?

Ohh! I love those high waisted trousers, that ruffled shirt, and the whole outfit witht the blue leggings/black leather.

My only fashion rule is to make sure there is balance- if I am wearing wide-leg pants, I make sure I wear a slimming top, or if I wear leggings, I make sure my top is more loose-fitting and flowy. I also try to have a print or brightly colored peice of clothing on either the top or bottom, not both. But with serious confidence, you can pull off just about anything.

Can't wait to see what you make- you are always so creative.

What do I do to look fresh?

I brush my hair before I put it back into the pony tail I was wearing the day before.

Where do you get all this energy?!

You rock.

GO GIRL! and Happy Birthday! Did you know that 35 is the prime of a woman's singing voice? Do you sing?

I love to keep my style fresh with: red lipstick, big hoop earrings, scarves and funky shoes.
