ghosties and beasties and things that go bump in the night

I'm just like you. I'm afraid of weird guys breaking into my house at night. I'm afraid of weird guys trying to steal my children. I'm afraid of weird guys that seem to be following me around WalMart late at night. Just about anything in the "weird guy" category is frightening to me.

But there are a few other things that just plain creep me out. Mostly of the insect family. I hate, hate, hate spiders. But I'm getting braver about sucking them up with the vacuum cleaner (with both extension wands hooked on, and shrieking the whole time-- convinced they're going to somehow jump on me!). I also hate grasshoppers. Those stinky things are forever hopping out of the bushes and sticking to my shirt. More shrieking. I also hate wasps, ants, beatles, and bugs so tiny you can't see them but you know they're there because you saw a magnified picture of them once on Oprah. But the one insect I fear above all others......is the moth! This one I can explain.......

Back when I was a newlywed, we lived on a farm. Our little house was surrounded by fields. It was a lovely, crisp October night. I had our porch light on. I decided to take a quick trip into town for milk. Fields + light+ cold= lots of moths. I opened up the front door. Can you see what's going to happen here? There was a WALL of moths in front of me. Hundreds of them! They of course thought my opening the door was an invitation to come flying into the house....and into my hair. Right then and there, I became forever traumatized by this horrible pseudo-butterfly creature. I hate the way moths fly all willy nilly right at you. I hate the way they're all covered in some kind of weird powder. I hate thinking that one has gotten into my house and is eating a hole in some article of clothing.

Once again, maybe I am sharing things with you about myself you'd rather not know. Perhaps you like your perception of me being a sane and rational and un-afraid of moths kind of woman.....

Saturday, I was changing a bulb in the porch light when I happened to look and see what was right by my hand. This:

EEEEEEEEEEK!!!!!!!! One of those giant hummingbird moths! The flower garden I planted is filled with perennials designed to attract butterflies and hummingbirds. And of course, with my luck--they attracted this instead. I'm surprised Zane didn't want to catch it and chase me around with it. He and Ethan think that's hilarious.

Is there anything weird ya'al are afraid of? Please don't let it be just me......
*****************

And Zane says I don't put enough pictures of him up on my blog. So here's a cute one--and a reminder to check on his blog post today :)!

Yeah! First comment for this post!

Your story is cracking me up. My 7 year old son ran in shrieking the other night that a moth was after him... my husband asked him why he was so freaked out by a moth.... his answer, "Dad, don't you know about how I am allergic to moths?"

Ah, yes of course, the infamous moth allergy.

This whole fear of bugs is what keeps me from traveling to exotic places like Costa Rica and Africa...well, that and time...and money.

Teehee- We can do without visits from any area of the insect family as well!!! Have a blessed day!!

Hi, I'm a lurker, but I've left a comment before. I'm with you on the moth thing, but there's one even more creepy than moths. I call them "sprickets" (spider/cricket), but they are actually called Camel Crickets. Here in NC they are plentiful. They appear out of thin air (well, not really, but it always seems like it), and they look like gi-normous crickets with spider legs - BUT THEY JUMP!!! To kill them you have to have cat-like reflexes...and a large shoe. Blech.

Heather said...

Yes, I DO share your moth phobia because anything that flies like a bird must be evil. Butterflies are okay because they're pretty, but moths...well, they're just GROSS!

Elena said...

HA HA! So funny, especially the explanation of vacuuming a spider. (I'm right there with you, screaming all the while. I don't know why that helps, but it does.) But moths? SO funny! Look how pretty that one was, I love the hummingbird ones. This post was great for my laugher. :)

Your post is so funny. Since we've moved to colorado we seem to have a lot of moths. I just leave my porch light on in the summer and some resident toads sit out there all night and eat them:) Then the toads are gone in the day thank heavens. Was wondering if I might be able to be a reader of Zane's blog. lmowimer@gmail.com. Keep up the great posts.

I'd have to say that I share your fears! I hate spiders and grasshoppers and moths! I'm always afraid they're going to crawl on me and that just creeps me out! :)

Earwigs, which in turn leads to my fear of old falling apart showers and bathrooms. My grandmas downstairs shower used to have holes in the wall where the DRYwall was worn away, (first question, who puts just DRYwall in a shower???) and earwigs used to crawl out of the wall. (second question, who doesn't patch said holes in the DRYwall in the shower???)I am gettin' all creepy thinking about it.

Emily said...

Moths! Jennifer.... moths!

What about "real" bugs like scorpions, trantulas, and centipedes?

I'm just kidding, moths gross me out too-- but spiders gross me out even more. One night when I was newly married a big hairy black spider fell on me while I was sleeping. That was gross.

Oh, and I hate snakes too. Especially rattle snakes. My dad had to chop up a few of those that found our front yard with a shovel. GROSS.

My MIL hates snakes and her sneaky son Jeff use to hide "snake-like" things all over her house like booby-traps. That poor woman.

Tiffany,
I'm allergic to moths too ;)!

Kari and Kijsa,
Big fans of yours! So happy to have you stop by!

Caroline,
I will now never, ever move to NC!!!

Heather,
I'm actually cool with butterflies!

Elena,
You are far braver than I am! And yes, the shrieking is a definate confindence builder when trying to suck up or squish a spider :)!

Lanisue,
I'm going to go buy myself a toad right now! And I'll send you an invite to Zane's blog soon.

Melissa,
yes--the being crawled on is the worst. Yuck!

Kim,
I don't think it's wet enough here to have silverfish, but I am aware of what they are--and they are creepy!

Kristan,
Yes--earwigs! Hate them too! And centipedes. Both of those DO climb out of holes in the walls. Which is why i have no holes in my walls :)!

Emily,
All those big things terrify me too. But thus far I haven't had a hundred rattlesnakes or scorpions coming at me :)! And I avoid camping in the desert so I won't ever have to deal with a rattlesnake! Your dad sounds like one brave man!!!

Melissa Lester said...

Snakes and bats are the worst for me. Bats especially are so horrible looking! I am also fearful of stinging bugs -- especially wasps. They have such an angry disposition. Now I'm totally creeped out! It's going to take a lot of online shopping to keep me from having nightmares tonight.

I run from bees like a crazy woman! I live in Las Vegas, and we have black widow spiders. They are very, very scary. Growing up in Washington, we would sometimes find a spider in the bathtub. I knew that I couldn't kill it, but I also knew that if I got my dad to come kill it, that he would chase my sister and me around the house with it! Good times!

Are You Serious! said...

♡ I hate bugs too. Especially ones that like to crawl on you or fly in your face/hair. When we went to Nauvoo they had a ton that would fly around the lights, ewwww!

Last night there was a hobo spider in my bedroom so I had to kill it because hubby wasn't here to do it for me! So I got a 4 foot by 1 inch dowl and jabbed it. Pretty sad I have to be 4 feet away to even get enough courage!

Lee Ann said...

Ok, so I can come kill your spiders and moths....but don't tell my husband.

What am I afraid of? Mice! Only if they startle me. My biggest fear? EARTHQUAKES!!!! I've only been in one that REALLY shook and a couple smaller ones, but it only took one to make me terrified. There have been hundreds off the Pacific coast recently and every night as I go to bed I think of my "plan".

Sissy said...

I have to confess...cats scare me. Yes, I know, cute cuddly cats! But they have sharp teeth and claws and they are sneaky and I always feel like they are plotting something evil. They never smile.

You ARE a good writer. I HATE to read (don't gasp too much), and I find myself smiling and picturing and just having a good time as I read your WHOLE moth story.

You made a good choice to major in writing. It's just good.

Miki said...

Oh.....hmmmmm....my bug of choice....since everyone else picked one. I'm going to say, well, gosh, why do I always have to be the oddball out? I was busy today, JUST today, squishing ants between my fingers because they made their way into my house (I found their entrance route btw, and they're toast now, Raid to the rescue).

I found out Elena hates worms through my blog (you're invited btw if you ever want an invitation), and my codename for laser tag if you ever play me is CENTIPEDE. I love 'em.

What's my bug of choice to hate? OoooOOOoh, any bug that will harm my children. WATCH OUT ANY BUG THAT WILL HARM MY CHILDREN. My pincer fingers and mad face are comin' to get you (granting I won't need a shoe)!

Mikki said...

Kennedy can come and take care of any of your outside bugs. She loves to collect them and I find them dead in her room (because of the smell).
Me, I am completely disgusted by mice, and am totally petrified of any type of bee, hornet or wasp. I buy killer sprays buy the truck load in the spring.

Being back in the Southeast has reminded me that there are nasty buggies all over the place...but some really nasty ones that I did NOT miss while we were in Montana... COCKROACHES. Nasty bugs. Fortunately our cat loves to chase them down and kill them. The ants however, she won't touch. And both types of bugs have invaded. ICK!!

"The Queen in Residence" said...

I decided to be brave one day and kill a big black spider in the garage. So armed with the can of bug killer spray, I leaned in close and began to spray. This was not just one spider, but a mom carrying all her little babies on her back, and once that spray hit them it was like 400 spiders and they were all running towards me. Of course I am right up against the wall and screaming my head off. Needless to say that when it was all over, I was shaking, sweating, hoarse, and had the worst case of the creepy-skin feeling ever!!!! I hate bugs so much.

Anonymous said...

Ughhhhh... I just read the last comment and it made me shiver!!! NASTY! I had that happen in Nampa once only I was actually going to step on the spider and then all the little babies came spilling off and all over and I about died! I have loved hearing everyone's fears. This was such a fun post.

TOTALLY afraid of spiders. in fact once when I was probably like 20...I was in my bedroom getting ready to go to work. I went to leave and realized there was a spider above the door. I was paralyzed. I called my best friend and said, "I'm trapped in my room" she asked why and I told her. She laughed at me a bit and then graciously talked me into putting a towel over my head and making a run for it....so to answer your question...no, you are not weird. Just normal.

"The Queen in Residence" said...

I have an even better one....

When my hubby was on his mission, in the carribean, translation everything is BIG!!!! The sister missionaries asked them to come over and take care of a spider for them. Being the big brave men that my hubby and his companion thought that they were, they entered the room and found not a spider but a tarantula. So armed with a broom and as much courage as they could muster they readied to do battle.

He states that it took the sister missionaries 2 weeks to stop laughing everytime that they saw them.

Tarantulas can leap and it did, all around the room to the sound of horrible "women" screams of these brave men. When it was all over, my hubby had killed the tarantula with his scriptures and his companion was up on the bed in the fetal position mumbling from terror.

Gotta love those mission stories!!

Cheers from a fellow SITSta and congrats on being the featured blogger! You probably would've loved to have owned one of our cats from when I was a kid, growing up on a farm. Why? Because Sweet Potato used to eat bugs. Her favorites were crickets, grasshoppers and moths. So, she would've been your own personal exterminator, because woe betide the bug that hopped or flew within 5 feet of her!

Me? I was just grossed out because we could hear her crunching on the bugs (ew!) and then she'd come jump in our laps right after a buggy snack and breathe bug breath all over us (ew ew!) and lick our hands/arms (ew ew EW!). But at least there were no bugs inside the house, ever!

Cheers!

Sheri said...

Congrats on being featured!

I also hate creepy crawlies. I esp. hate when I do get up the nerve to squish them and they crunch!

Last night as I was pulling weeds, I reached down and a toad jumped up at/on me. Home teachers were just leaving, and they got a FANTASTIC laugh out of my reaction! Ugh . . . hate creepy/crawly/jumpy things!!!

Courtney said...

I'm afraid of all those things too! But I am borderline phobic when it comes to fish. Not big, or dead fish, but little, live, wall to wall completely surround you, pet store fish. I can deal with big cool aquariums with sharks and stuff. But please don't EVER ask me to go to the fish section of a pet store. If you do, then the glass will all break at the same time and the fish will get me!

Hey SITsta. I am with you regarding the spiders. They are horrible. I am getting more brave about killing them, myself. Moths, don't bother me so much. However, I have never been swarmed by thousands of them, either.

Awwww, that little moth is so cute! Periodically we get a 'water bug' (ie. Roach) in our basement... Not an infestation mind you, just a loan 'water bug' here or there. When I run across one of those, the bile rises, along with the fear in my throat and I search for a sane human in our house to remove the offensive beast. Believe it or not, it's usually my daughter... My son is the one standing on the chair next to me.

Oh. My. Gosh.
Seeing that picture gave me the chills. I'm scared of moths too.
and spiders.
and grasshoppers.
and fish.
and birds.
and any insect or animal.
Seriously.
I really don't want to self promote, but I've already got two posts on my blog about things I'm afraid of.
If you're interested in reading them, they are:

I am not a fan of anything creepy, crawly or flyey.

The other night a fuzzy (yes, fuzzy) million legged crawlie thing was going up my wall. I tried to smack it off and IT TOUCHED ME!!!!

I am getting chills just thinking about it (or maybe it's the open window I am sitting in front of...)

Bugs = Yuck
