so you think you can dance

I was right there with ya'al cheering on big David and at the same time feeling bad for little David (who, by the way, was the only contestant that ever made Ryan Seacrest look tall...). But that was all sooooo YESTERDAY! Today, I have a big grin plastered on my face because me and my buddies Ben and Jerry just finished watching this:
THIS SHOW IS SO STUPID!!! (and stupid means "really great" in cool dancer language, don't ya know!) This is my fourth year watching, and every time it starts--it just feels like summer has officially begun. I love the ballroom dancers and the jazz dancers and the contemporary dancers and the popper/locker/beat boys and the occasional tapper. I think it all makes me so very giddy because.... I was once a dancer.
First, I spent 3 years of junior high choreographing dance routines for our cheerleading squad. We danced to a lot of Depeche Mode and Yaz and that "Oh Yeah!" song from Ferris Bueller. I would spend hours studying dancers in music videos, and taught myself how to move like them ( just like Napoleon Dynamite, only without the moon boots.).
In high school I moved up to the Dance and Drill Team. Our advisor was a professional dancer who had once auditioned for Janet Jackson's "Rhythm Nation" video. She was 4' 2" of MEAN. We spent numberless hours before and after school, on Saturdays, and sometimes in the evening doing these insane routines she would come up with over and over and over. We would leap and twirl and contort and slam ourselves onto the floor until we were all black and blue---and we had better all do it with a smile....or else! Sometimes in my life, when I feel like giving up on a task, I can hear little Lisa the choreographer's voice in my head : "YOU'D BETTER GET UP AND DO THAT AGAIN AND DO IT RIGHT OR WE'LL BE HERE ALL NIGHT LADIES!!!". And I get up. Because I don't want to be there all night! Anyhow, the result of all that dancing torture we were put through was a really good team. We had to compete against schools with a lot fancier props and costumes and the like, and we always kept up. And heaven knows we always felt like we'd really earned it!
Then, in college, I agreed to take a clogging class with my roommate-- who wanted to meet some guy that was in it. I thought I'd hate it.....but I didn't. I learned to "fuse" the hip-hop/ pop/ jazz/ballet stuff that I'd done in high school with the clogging steps, and ended up having a blast. I still have my clinkity/ tappity shoes, and pull them out on occasion to "impress" my kids.
*********
So that's why I love So You Think You Can Dance. Because in the privacy of my own family room, with the blinds closed, and the TV turned up loud, I kick off my shoesies and see if I can still learn a new step or two.....and for a few minutes, when no one else is looking---I really think I can dance ;)!

I used to fancy that I could dance and choreograph steps until I started watching that show!!!

I absolutely love it and am wowed by what those bodies can do! I know I would not stand a chance in an audition now after having 3 babes. HA HA. I laugh and laugh just thinking about it.

But you, you go girl!!! Dance and clog your emotions into the ground. In the privacy of your home you are not alone. He's cloggin' right with you.

We loooooooove this show too! Sometimes for the cool music moreso than the dancing but the dancing can truly be amazing. You're right - it does sort of ring in the summer. It's also wonderful how many dancers have been LDS too.

What a great post!! I love that you were (and will always be) a dancer. Keep dancin', girl. It does a body good.

I am so in love with SYTYCD! Ohmy. It's right up there with loving my boyfriend Big David. I have faithfully watched the show for three years now and I still think it is amazing! Even last night I was twirling around my bedroom after the show went off and imagining music in my head. My husband laughed, but I was a ballerina inside!

I must admit, this will be my first year watching this show, but I thought I'd give it a try since nothing else is on. I've only seen snippets from last night's show. (We had some friends over and as soon as the guy undressed to his undies, I thought I'd better save it for mommy's eyes only.) So, I'm excited to learn what this show is all about. And I LOVED the comment about you closing the blinds and dancing. That just made me laugh!! (Only becuase I imagine myself doing it and THAT is very laughable.) I don't just think I can dance, I KNOW i can't. :)

What I would give to be a fly on the wall when you're dancing in your family room!
I was also into all that dancing years ago. Sigh... Dance teams, competitions, choreographing, sweating, and working my butt off! And I LOOOOOOOOOOOVED it!

I'm so jealous of you people who can mover to a beat. Hubby and I apologize to our girls all the time because neither of us can move. Maybe some night I'll have to close the blinds, kick hubby out and give it a whirl.

I'm so glad that your DVR worked. You seemed really excited about that show starting. I may have to tune in just to check it out. My kids think I'm crazy whenever I start dancing when a song a danced to in high school comes on the radio. I have to say that I love that Carter will sing at the top of his lungs with me in the car too.
The pots were really cute from last night. Thanks for the effort you put into with the girls. You will be missed (although I'm glad you will be teaching Ryan now).
And I told on myself in my blog about Indiana Jones and my bad parenting.

You can clog... AHHHHHH! Your are my second bloggy buddy to have this skill. I am so jealous. We used to see the cloggers at Knott's Berry Farm (a So Cal amusement park) and I wanted to learn so badly. Never happened. Maybe I should add it my list of things to do before I die... or get too old.

Sweet, you have Ben and Jerry for friends. I usually just have Orville, but I do love him, he comes over so frequently.
My dance show would be, You Only Wish You Could Dance, Dunce.

So, I'm a very jealous dancer watcher. I envied the cheerleaders and drill team.

Cailean,
Love the music too!

Heather,
I think I was in the best shape of my life during my dancing years!

Sissy,
Glad to know I'm not the only "closet dancer" :)

Elena,
I think the try out segments are much more "sensational" than the acutual show, but I usually record it too!

Amanda,
I know you are a crazy talented dancer-- therefore you may never, NEVER be at my house during this show ;)!!!

LeeAnn,
I now picture you dancing like Elaine on Seinfeld ;)!

Mikki,
Your post was great! And I couldn't even tell at what point my tape got shut off and Rolie Pole Olie got started. Guess I didn't miss much!

Mrs. Romero,
There are tons of adult clogging classes. You should just take one and see what you think!

Tamie,
This, Wife Swap, and SNL are about the only evening programs I ever watch. Glad you liked my 30 second song :)! Good to hear from you again!!!

Aubrey--
Ha! Ha! Ha! I'm happy you caught on to my little reference. Orville is a frequent guest here as well!

Kimm
I bet that's what makes you such a great aerobics instructor!

My husband and I faithfully watched Idol (I heart David Cook, even though I think he's a tad smug) and now we will faithfully watch SYTYCD. Funny huh, how my man will watch it with me. We have great laughs together. I think I actually like it better than Idol. I was blessed to be able to carry a pretty good tune, but I was never a dancer even though I always wanted to be. I live vicariously through the dancers. I totally called Sabra to win last season too. She was awesome. Maybe if I started to dance now in three years I'd be that good too!

Oh my gosh! You clog??? I haven't met anyone that clogs since I was 15! I totally clog (or did) too! We did a lot of countraaaay...big foo foo skirts with like 5 slips under them. Parades. Oh my gosh, I looooooved it! You know where to find me when I'm 80 (when I'm 40), k!

So fun! And Have you SEEN that dancing show on MTV (or is it VH1?) called Are You The Next Dance Crew? Or something STUPID (like how I worked that in?) like that? Oh, my gosh...I about cry every single time I watch that one! I used to dream of being a Fly Girl. Okay. I'll go so you can all agree that I'm a big, STUPID (ooooh, worked it in *again*) dork. Cuz I am.

But I can clog.

You're flipping awesome.

I'm just gonna sit here and listen to "Pocket Full of Sunshine" again and again and again, cuz you'll totally think I'm a freak if I copy you and put it on my playlist. And I have to listen to this song! It means so much to me. Take me awaaaaaaaaay...:P

Oh my goodness, I thought I was the only one who loved that show (sorry to say....in my age group!!!). I LOVE THAT SHOW!!!

Now before I say much more, I don't die to watch it, I don't cry if I miss it, but I DO love to watch it (I wouldn't cry if I missed any t.v. lately....another story). Anyway, did you see that guy who could contort his body to the cool, funky, sireny sounds? The music would stop, he would stop, and then it would start up again and you couldn't stop watching him!!! I really loved it.

I was working out at the time, and it made me want to RUN FASTER so that I could LOOK LIKE THAT!!

I wish I could dancE!!!

I'm the 22nd person to have to leave a comment on your dance post. We should all be ashamed! Remember Sno from the first season, with the white hair? Remember the guy that won and his best friend was that girl and they both danced together? Yeah. That was awesome. Said in my chris farley voice.

I haven't watched it lately but loved it the first year. And now I have to hate you because you are a dancer. Too bad. I really liked you. Don't you know that every girl dreams of being a dancer and if we are not the rules state that we have to hate all who are? Gosh, this friendship had such promise!

Heart you!

Love SYTYCD. Have watched for 4 years. Went to the tour when it came to town. Made a t-shirt and wore it to said tour. Frequently imitate Cat Deely's accent. LOVE that you love it too.

Gosh...I feel like such a loser! I've not watched this show :( I guess I'd better get on it! I was always the cheerleader that looked awkward during our dance routines! Hard for just to let loose ya know. This might be just what I need ;) I've been in AZ...so I'm trying to catch up on all my bloggy friends! I am glad to know everyone has survived without me! Happiest of Memorial Days to you!

Oh, just give me a glass of wine or two, and I think I can dance, too!! The rest of the time...not so much!! That said, I dance once a year at a fundraising dance for my children's school. Hopefully I don't look like the class clown...!!
