We had the house built, and were therefore able to pick our colors, finishes, etc.. However, we thought we'd only live there a few years, and so we went overly neutral and safe with everything. After 3 years, and a career change, we knew we'd be staying put longer than expected, and decided to make the house look a little more like us (o.k.--a little more like ME, but my husband did a lot of the labor anyway :)!).
I took numerous pictures of that house. I'd style it all up when the kids were at grandma's and shoot photos fit for magazines. Except that I did it all with the non-digital SLR--because I thought it was silly to store pictures on the computer where they had the potential of crashing into oblivion. So, I need to get to the scanner at my husband's office to get them on here. However, I did find a few decent ones to show you NOW. They've got people and birthday parties and such going on in them--but you can still gleen some design inspiration I think.
Here was our kitchen. I loved this kitchen. The cupboards use to be that standard builder oak with brass handles. It took me 3 months, but I painted all of 'em! We also wrapped the island in beadboard and had the Napoleon Brown Marble counter and backsplash installed right over the old counters (after roughing them up with a belt sander!). I think this was Ethan's birthday....
These doors use to be solid. We cut out the middles, added the new knobs, and stapled in hardware cloth. It's only $5 a roll and gives it a great farmhouse look.
Here's Brad feeding Liam--but you can also see a close up of the counters and backsplash. We added the little beadboard cap that runs along the tile--it was a great way to not have to do so much trimwork with the paint between the tiles and cupboards.
Here was our dining room. I loved our floors so much(Mannington's Distressed Heart Pine) that I put the same ones in our current home. See the texture on the walls? I wanted it to look like a subtle stucco. That finish ran through here and the living room. It took me 26 hours of painting (off and on of course!) to give it that look. I was really channeling that Italian Country Farmhouse look--and this fit the bill perfectly. It involves a lot of blending paint, but if any of you are interested in how to do it--let me know and I'll give you directions.* I also think hanging a mantle shelf on your wall is a great way to make up for the fact that you don't have a fireplace to decorate up! *And just to brag a little bit--my hubby and I made that table!
And look at our room! The vinyl letter woman wasn't sure she could make the wording as big as I wanted, but was willing to give it a try--as long as I paid for it regardless of it turning out right or not. There was a lot of holding our breath as we applied it, then peeled off the backing--but it turned out EXACTLY how I wanted it too. I would have ordered them again for this house, but the vinyl letter lady had moved and I couldn't find another who could do them this big. At least I have my picture!
I think a home is always a work in progress and would be really boring if you ever really got "done". What do you think?!

Hey if you want BIG vinyl letters, go to my blog, click on my "Erica" friend link and leave her a comment to see if she can do it. She is my SIL and her hubby has a sign business.
ladies and gentlemen, she's done it again!
Love the beaded board!!!!
Love the cutting a hole in the cabs--were you afraid?
Love the lettering! I've seen people on etsy sell those, maybe someone can do that size!
GREAT ideas!
I'm with you! I constantly look around my home to see what else I can do to it. It keeps me from thumbing through house plan books...
Your former home is lovely!!
Cheers!
Linda
I look at these and it makes do a little sigh. I feel right at home and then feel like I should drive to Nampa to go to my own home. I MISS it!!!!
i love what you did with the kitchen cupboards. i never thought of just punching out the interior of the door....i will have to copy that when the time comes. unfortunatley you have to keep your cpboards pretty well organized in order to have that...right now, that would not work for me. we have a mess of a shelf with vitamins and everything else that you could use in a time of fevers and chills.
I am in love with beadboard. It is my favorite!
Once again, I love it all! I just put vinyl letters in Sarah's room and I love it....found them at Target though. I want words in every room of my house. For some reason that's something I really like.
Great job!

♥ Everything looks great! I don't know if I could have painted over oak or cut it! I love the hardware cloth look.
Huge vinyl lettering. We have a lady here in our town that does it that big. She did some at church in the primary & yw rooms...
lovely and I can see why you miss it...

Hello and Love your old house -- esp the letters...

What a great Kitchen!!! Someday.. when my hubby retires from the Navy, I'll have my own house! And, I'm gonna do that to my cabinets too! What an awesome idea! I've used Chicken wire in a few things, but I like the mesh look much better~ Thanks for the idea!
I love the vinyl lettering.. I had some in my last house too. I found a guy locally that makes vinyl signs to make mine (he makes them for companies to put on their cars.. I told him to market to the homemaker too!) .. much cheaper than online! Search your phonebook!

Love all your ideas. Keep em coming. I am so redoing my cabinets this spring. I know it is a HUGE undertaking but I can't handle them any longer. I am going to try punching out the middle of mine and putting glass in some of them. I think I may try the beadboard around the island thing. I love it. Once again, thanks for the inspiration
Jennifer~ You have such a cheerful blog. Love it! Thanks for stopping by mine today. :)
I love your houses too. All of them! I get attached to things as well. It is hard to say goodbye to something you have invested so much love into. ;) You are so talented though and have such an eye for design and structure. Congrats. I love that talent. ;)
How are things?
I *love* your new blog design! how cool!
I hope you feel better soon. We moved 5 times in 3 years. I'm an expert packer and un-packer. We're staying put for a while, here, though.
BUT! every 6 mos or so I get all antsy and start chucking stuff out. One good thing about moving is that you really clean out the clutter.

7 times in 13 years? I can't believe it?? It's a lot!!
In Norway many people live in two or three houses all their lifes. Today I live in the house were I was born, and one of my children will probably live here with their children when I am gone...Hopefully many years from now since I am 36... hahahaha!
But still; So interesting and fun to see the pictures from the house, the big letters were cool!
( I am sorry for my bad grammar...--as always)
i loved this house of yours! you always do the best job though. i loved the vinyl lettering... i have some throughout my house now and love the look it adds. so cute!
You are way too talented!!! Look at you! Seriously, do you want my scanner? If you don't I think DI will get it...
Oh no, no post again today. You must still be sick. Sending warm thoughts of home made chicken-noodle soup your way!
I love what you did with your kitchen. I was just posting about what I did with mine. It is very different, but I like your style a lot too.
But I LOVE the letters in your room! What a cool way to get some artwork that literally makes a statement. I can see why you miss it, but it sounds like a couple comments have links for how you can get new ones.
Hope you are feeling better.
Love that idea with the cabinets......I have secretly thought about doing that, but I know my husband would drop over dead if I suggested it.
You'll have to check out my feature later..... wink wink.
Also, LOVE the blog design! It's very cute, so perfect for you. Very original.
