back to life

I'm still dealing with a lot. I have paperwork and forms and applications up to my eyeballs, and enough phone calls to make that I should probably hire myself a secretary. As the daughter of a widow, I have always had an emergency "back up life plan" formulated in my mind, just in case--but having it there, and actually executing it have turned out to be two totally different things. I'm trying to make sure I only spend three hours a day on the business of re-inventing my life, and the rest trying to live and appreciate it.

I spent all Saturday morning working in my yard. Nothing like hard work to keep the mind occupied! I figured out how to "cold start" the lawnmower all by myself by moving the turtle/rabbit thingie. I also got the weed eater started on the first pull and fixed the line several times when it broke. I pulled all the weeds and re-seeded the bare patches of grass. And finally ran the leaf blower to clean the driveway and sidewalks. I had 8796 steps on my pedometer when I was done. Not bad, eh?!

Then my good (but blog-less) friend Heidi and I went to go see this:

Yes--when I have my pick of movies, I go see a documentary. I loved it though. Ben Stein just makes anything good. I know we all remember him as the teacher from Ferris Bueller's Day Off, but he was actually a speech writer for President Nixon before starting down the acting path. Crazy! Anyway, I'm sure this won't be in theatres for too long, but I recommend seeing it if and when you can.

Saturday evening, the boys and I went to our next door neighbors, Chris and Michelle's, for a barbecue. A great use of a (finally!!!) warm day. There were 4 or 5 other families there and about 13 3,4, and 5 year olds. Very loud, but fun too. A lot of Guitar Hero was played-- with all the little ones 'busting a move' to "Slow Ride". It was HILARIOUS! Chris is a master on the barbecue and made these amazing hamburgers flavored with some kind of secret seasoning he won't reveal. I actually ate a whole one-- which I think is the most food I've eaten in two weeks. Even after we came back home, Liam and James continued to talk to all the kids through the knot holes in our fence. I think they also managed to push a few of the toys from the sandbox through the holes as well. Too cute!

Today before church, I packed up a quick lunch and we drove clear across town to picnic at a park in the foothills. As I watched the boys pair up on either end of the seesaw, and watched them help each other to go down the slide, and saw their precious faces just beaming in the Spring sunshine-- I could have kicked myself for not bringing the camera. But I took lots of pictures in my mind, and though those aren't the kind that you get to appreciate--they work just fine for me :).

So there I am trying to get on with this new chapter in my life-- and so grateful I have good friends and four beautiful boy faces to brighten up each day just a little. And I have even found myself smiling for 10 and 15 minutes at a stretch with no thoughts as to the difficulties that still lie ahead--just the blessings that are in front of me for the moment. And I think that's a good start!

(this is obviously an older photo of the boys and I, but I've always thought we looked just like angels in it! I figured I'd throw it up here so you had a little something more than google images to look at... and so that I could appreciate it throughout the day too ;)! ).

You do look like angels. ;) Congrats on the weedwacking and mowing. Good way to get out agression, turn it into work. I usually just throw plastic cups at the inside of my garage. That works too. ;)

I have heard from a couple of friends that we should see that expelled movie. It just seems that I always have kids in tow when I go to see a movie and I doubt they would enjoy it. I will have to make a plan.
Smiles!

I too want to see Expelled before it's gone. I am SO impressed with your lawnmower starting skills. You go girl. I seriously don't think there's much better for the soul than working in the sunshine. It just brightens everything up.

Yay! So glad you had a busy/fun weekend! Your "turtle/rabbit" comment made me laugh out loud. I had to figure out how to run the snowblower (by using the rabbit/turtle thing) when Jarom was in one of his foriegn places (can't remember right now) and a neighbor's hubby was gone too so I had to show her how to use her's. You'll have to work on that neighbor (or spy) to get that recipe. I love a good bbq burger. And your picture is beautiful, such little boys then!

I love how un-posed the picture is. When I get pictures taken of the girls, I always want to order the ones where they are distracted and laughing (or crying) at each other. That's our life. They never sit beautifully posed and smiling. The last time we got their picture taken, the photographer asked them to dogpile and she snapped the results. We bought the whole package.

The contrast between your white shirts and the dark green foliage is so fresh. I'm proud of you for smiling and even laughing a little. I realize that is probably a very hard part of life right now. I think about you every day and pray that you'll keep smiling a little more every day.

Jennifer,

Once again you have amazed me! You lived a great weekend. You should be so proud of yourself. You looked gorgeous at church yesterday by the way.

Amanda told me about your blog. I love being able to check out the people I know and their lives and kids. I have so much respect for you, I can only wish to be as strong as you. Take care. (I am also completely amazed at your blog, mine is so plain compared to yours). Loved your hair at church, awesome!!

Hey! I can't believe there is someone in the world with my name, spelled almost like mine, so close to me (a friend of a friend of an aquaintence/friend). So fun.

Good job Jennifer for keeping everything so real. I'm so glad for blogging friends in today's world for support needed, and support given.

I just am amazed, still, at how good of a mommy you are. You really inspire me to try and do things (like the picnic you spontaneously went to, and the bbq even though I would like nothing better than to hide!).

I can't wait to see Elena's bunny/turtle thing. I have NO idea what the heck that is....

Good to hear from you again.

I love how you are finding the sunshine in everything. You go girl! You deserve a big high five for your lawnmowing/weed whacking skills. Wow! You continue to amaze me...in different ways now. Know you are though of with great respect here in good ole Midwest Indiana.

I'm glad to see you moving forward, no matter how hard. Marinating in sorrow does no good....but we seem to find ourselves there for moments. Moments are neccesary, marinating not. :) Good for you.

Now..for my hamburgers. I mix a little Italian sausage with my beef, I mix a half packet of meatloaf seasoning with a couple of teaspoons of teriyaki sauce. Mix it all together. Make REALLY yummy burgers!

I am thinking of you so much lately. It is funny to do that about someone I don't know in real life. Thanks for sharing yours with us - the good, the bad and the blessings.

You've been on my mind sooo much lately! I have a post up on my blog that is from an excerpt from the book by Nicole Johnson, The Invisible Woman. Somehow, I think in the days to come you may gain inspiration from this book. I'm dying to read the book--the excerpt was so good. I hope you have a great day today!

Love your photos but it's the knotholes and the talking through the fence that made my day...Jennifer
