i know famous people

I was just thinking the other day that for being born and raised in a boring, mid-sized Idaho town, I actually know a few semi-famous people! Of course I'm not on a talking face-to-face basis with A-listers like Mrs. R (are you ever going to divulge that woman's identity by the way?..... :) ), but this is WHO I "KNOW" (with google images... Yay google!)

*David Klein (the one in the glasses)

He was two grades ahead of me, and every "artsy" girl (me included!) had a crush on him. After graduation, he went to the Vancouver Film School.... at the same time as Kevin Smith, Ben Affleck (and I think Matt Damon). Following his first year there, he came back to talk to the TV/Video Production class I was in as a favor to our teacher. After his little speech was done and everyone was working on their projects, he came and sat by me. We knew each other through a mutual friend, and had talked enough that he was aware of my ambitions to be a writer one day. He said (in a very cool, I've-been-away-at-film-school-for-a-year kind of voice): "Hey,I remember reading some of your poetry. It was really good. I'd like to get your opinion on this script", then he slid a first-draft copy of the movie Clerks in front of me. Have any of you heard of it? It turned out to be a big underground hit with a cult following, and recently spawned a Clerks II. He ended up being the director of photography on it, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy. I believe he also did some kind of consulting work with Dogma. Yeah--one day his people are going to call my people and we're totally going to do lunch....

*Rob Morris

Rob was one of my good friend's boyfriends during junior high, and he broke her heart--so I never thought too highly of him. We did, however, finally call a truce my senior year of high school when we served on a church board together. He turned out to be a pretty cool guy who always stood up for what he knew was right. "Freight Train", as he's known, just helped the Indianapolis Colts win the '07 Superbowl. He's been injured a ton, but I still tune into Colts games just to watch him sitting on the bench and say "hey! I know him!".

*Steve Cardenas.
Steve was Rocky the red Power Ranger back in the mid-90's when Power Rangers were huge -- with their own live action "Turbo" movie and everything! Even without kids at the time, I watched it-- just to look at the guy who I use to call "Steve-Knock-It-Off" (since that's what I was always telling him....) who sat behind me in A.P. English, copied all of my book quiz answers, was always trying to write his name on the back of my neck with his pen (he called it "branding" me!), and told me almost daily that I needed to wear tighter jeans. Classy, eh? Funny thing was I never even realized he knew karate.....

this is just for my benefit----you don't have to watch it------unless you're really, really bored ------and I have to admit the kids and I have watched it like 12 times...... :).

*Jeran Dahlquist.

He's the mowhawked one up front. The same one from my "your old boyfriends" post. I always knew him as J.D. though--so that's who he'll forever be to me. Just to give you an idea of how much fun he was--during our dating years, he use to bring me bags of flour (I brought you flours!) instead of flowers. A LOT of bags of flour! That always cracked me up---and made my mom shake her head in confusion (and have to make many loaves of bread and batches of cookies to use up all that flour....).

Currently he's only famous locally, but after countless invites-- my friend Tina and I finally went to catch one of his shows on Friday night. And now I have to group him with these other fellas because he's going to go far. I always knew he would. The guy's got talent leaking out his ears--- and I think he's finally found the ambition to match it! His voice has this dreamy, talkative quality to it when he sings mellow stuff, and now--with the Naughties--he's belting out OK Go and Kaiser Chiefs and Dandy Warhols classics--and all with a thoroughly entertaining stage presence that is sooooooo "him". I admit I felt as giddy and giggly as my 15 year old self when he acknowledged me from the stage, then came to sit and chat with me during their breaks. Of course I was sitting next to and talking with his pregnant girlfriend (she was very sweet and I'm sure responsible for his newly-channeled ambition!), so my 15 year old self stayed fully aware that I was now 33 and had a mini-van waiting for me in the parking garage :). It will be fun one day though to say "I knew him when...."
**********************************

And finally my "honorable mentions" because I've just sat next to them on planes or in airports:

*"Macho Man" Randy Savage. It was the late 80's and I was 13--flying home from visiting my friend in Texas. Practically the whole WWF was on that plane with me. Hulk was up in first class of course, but ol' Macho Man sat on one side of me and some football player from the Miami Dolphins sat on the other. They both asked if they could have my cookie that came with lunch....

Then, just this past October, I sat next to Hollywood Square's Bruce Valanche in the Las Vegas airport. He kept tying a straw into knots and flipping a book cover open and shut repeatedly. We thought he might have just been a mentally challenged person, but then we spied his name on his tickets. And--hey!-- we had the same pink cell phone!

Wonder why I don't know any famous women?.... yet.

And now I want to know: Do YOU know or have you seen any famous people?!?! DO TELL!!!

YAY - first commenter! I have to ask - you didn't give Macho Man your cookie did you? I can just picture him give you the pile-driver until you tapped out! Nah, just kidding. Ummm, famous people I have seen...

A member of Hanson almost (literally) ran into me at LAX in '99.

I've seen Ric Flair (WWF or E or whatever) at the Charlotte airport

I sat next to (oh shoot, can't think of his name), but he played "Hal" in Cliffhanger. He's not "A" list, but he's been in a couple popular movies.

That's it. Don't think I'll ever run into anyone famous where I live now. Not exactly a mecca for stars.

Delurking for this one... :o)

Let's see... I went to high school with Brian McKnight. I've seen him in interviews and he always claims to be younger than I KNOW he is. Weird.

I've met Scott Valentine (the guy who played Mallory's boyfriend on Family Ties), Skippy (who played their neighbor)(and I met them years apart...just a coincidence), Julian Lennon at his concert in Orlando, Huey Lewis at his concert in Orlando. Umm...Linda Ellerbee and Tammy Faye Baker when they were shopping at the outlet mall I worked at in Orlando. (not together)I think that's it. :o)

Anyway... love your blog. Thought I'd mention that while I was delurked.

In college, I worked as an estate manager. For a very famous couple. But am under non-disclosure agreements. Can't even say I worked for them. But perhaps you can use your imagination...

Halle Berry - worked as an estate manager for another well known family - and she was their neighbor when she was married to Braves player David Justice.

When my mom was younger, she was at the airport and checking in for a flight. And the clerk asked her if she liked the group "The Monkees." She said "not really." But...they were all right behind her :-)

SHeesh, who knew all those famous people came out of Idaho? I think my one and only claim to fame is that I dated Ricky Busker my sophomore year of HS. When he was 11 he starred with Darius McCary in a movie called Big Shots, but never did anything else.

THe only famous person that I have met was Bob Barker on the taping of the Price is Right that I went to. Jeff on the other hand worked at LAX as a customer service agent and met a whole slew of famous people, he gave Jewel directions to her flight, saved a special seat for the dog that was on "Mad About You". Denied first class seats to Pauley Shore. Was the first officer on a flight with Nanny Jojo from Supernanny on her flight to LA. He helped Roseanne Barr collect her bags and said she was very nice in real life. He helped check in workout guru Richard Simmons and his very proper and expensive suit clad boyfriend on their flight. (he said he even dresses in his sequencey shorts to the airport). He helped Jerry Stiller find a private place to sit as to not be attacked by the blood-thirsty fans. There are others, but I forget-- he just recently saw Regis Philbin at the airport once, and also President Clinton. He couldn't get a close up view though because the place was crawling with secret service.

My friends Adrienne and Jeremy were in the same ward as Rick Schroeder from Silver spoons, and actually went on a ward camp out with him and sang camp out songs.

My Uncle use to have a bakery in Santa Monica and met everyone from Arnold Schwarzenegger, to the lady who invented Barbie, to Richard Simmions also.

You can't be serious about seeing a first draft copy of "Clerks!" That's huge...to anyone who knows what you're talking about. That's crazy!

I'm also coming out of lurk-land for this one. This was a fun post, and got me thinking. I met Tim McGraw in a backstage-pass-kind-of-way. My husband and I got a picture with him.

I was good friends with Jason Mraz in school. He sings "The Remedy" and "Curbside Prophet." He also just released his newest CD with a duet with Colbie Caillet. Love it. Awesome vocals. I just did a post on my blog to commemmorate his birthday. jenchambers.blogspot.com

I KNOW! Glad somebody got how "big" that actually was. I think I only got 6-7 pages into it before class was done and I think my opinion was something to the effect of: "sounds really cool, but I'm pretty sure it's going to be rated R....." Now that I think of it, I should have asked him to let me take it with me....and then KEPT IT :)! Ah, hindsight....

Emily,
I'm laughing at Richard Simmon's boyfriend's description. And that two of your family have seen him!

Tina,
Howdy friend! I saw Brooklyn, NY on my reader! I should have told about all the famous people you've seen living there! It was SO GOOD to hang out with ya while you were here. Now don't go getting mugged :)!

Nope- I don't know any famous people. But can I get your autograph for knowing famous people? Admittedly I've never heard of any of those people except for maybe the Power Rangers guy I might have recognized. I guess I don't get out much.

Summer Miller said...

What?! Richard Simmon's has a boyfriend???? :)

I have Michelle Kwan's autograph and she is adorably nice in person.

I have Dave Matthew's autograph although it was my friend Will who met him in a Barnes and Nobles.

We met the drummer from U2 in a hotel lobby when the Irish soccer team was playing in Orlando. I don't know his name, but I said hello.

Clerks? Shut up!

I went to school with a couple of people that I guess could be considered "well-known", but who knows.

I went to school with the sister of an NFL football player. His name is Spencer Nead. (I guess I went to school with him too, he was a couple years younger than me). If I remember right he played for the New Orleans Saints. His younger brother Kelly and my brother Kaleb were best friends in high school.

I also went to school with the brother of Ron Brinkerhoff. I've met him a few times when I was alot younger. He wrote the screenplay for "The Guardian" with Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher in it. He also worked on (not at the writer) "Far and Away" and "The Sandlot".

I don't know if it counts that I used to hang out at August Busch's house at my friends fishing lodge or not. He was never there, though, but there was lots of beer that I didn't drink.

I think that's about it. Not too exciting, but that's okay.

Mikki- My husband is Spencer's cousin. Small world.

Gosh! I am not even worthy to comment on this post! Let me think...um...nope, not a single person! The best I can do...off the top of my head...a good friend of mine from years ago...her brother is on The Young and the Restless...which I never watch...he's a pretty big deal, wish I knew his "play name" but his last name in real life is Luckinbill. That's a mouthful...surprised he didn't change it! I do feel like sometimes I am married to a celebrity though...my husband is an orthodontist...and EVERYWHERE we go, some teenager or their parent always comes up to him and says, "Hi, Dr. Amy!" I see his shirts ALLLLL over town. So, that's it for me :) I'm VERY honored to know you Jennifer P. Don't forget me when YOU go BIG!

Okay, Clerks is one of the best all time movies EVER. I cannot believe you touched the script.

I limited it to people I have actually met...not just "seen on the street." These are the ones I can recall...

Kirk Cameron (I was in one episode of Growing Pains!)
Kate Beckinsale
David Hasselhoff
Eddie Murphy
Ewan McGregor
Al Pachino
Warren Beatty
Annette Bening
Tori Spelling
Oliver Platt
Diane Lane
Brooke Burke
LIT (the band)
Jonathan Taylor Thomas (Home Improvement)
Erin Gray (Silver Spoons)
Vanna White
Michael Chiklis (The Shield and Fantastic Four)
Billy Bush (Acess Hollywood)
Magic Johnson
KeShawn Johnson
Middle Eastern Royalty (they have body guards and everything.. does that count?)

(I did not list the name of the celeb from my recent post, as she would be easy to pick out and then you would be out of your misery, and I can't have that.)

Now, if you want to a list of the celebrities whose assistants I have spoken with... that's a whole 'nother list.

T (And, I posting anonymously to make myself even cooler.

Check your email...

It's the episode where the concert is sold out. I'm in line next to "Mike" and "Ben" and exclaim something while looking disappointed. If you find it, I must see it!

I don't know anyone! My husband runs into people all the time. And my brother in law is a teacher in a private LA school and knows lots of them on first name basis...Andy Garcia, Robert (Bob, to him) DeNiro just to name a few. He has hung out with Derek Jeter and Nomar Garciaparra (Mia Hamm's hubby) and the list goes on. But as for me...no one, nada. Great post as usual my friend!

emily freeman said...

I know no one. I am a celebrity loser, connected only by the highest 6 degrees, unlike T up there.

I did stand behind Katie Holmes in the Charlotte airport once. She ordered a latte. She's freakishly tall.

Chris Daughtry goes to my church and I almost ran smack into him as the Barney Fife security guards debriefed him in the foyer. He wears a tobagan...not a sled, a hat. That's what we call them here.

I saw Sno from So You Think You Can Dance in New York City a few years ago. She's a lot shorter in real life than she looks on TV. But her hair really is well...white as snow.

As you can see, my definition of celebrity just took a big dip with that one. Although The Nester is my sister. She's kind of famous. And I went to school with Billy Graham's grandson. One of the, like 10,000 of them. He was actually a friend, unlike Katie, Chris and Sno.

I laughed outloud when you said wrestler dude guy asked for your cookie. Did you give it up?

Heather said...

Nope. Haven't ever met anyone. Surely I'm due to meet someone.

Jennifer P. said...

Emily--
Of course I gave him my cookie--wouldn't you?! I gave the football player my bag of peanuts since I didn't have two cookies. And I also have to add that those were two HUGE guys and I felt very squished in between them! :)

Wow! I'm impressed with all these brushes with the rich and famous.

I have met no one. I did SEE John Elway (QB for Denver Broncos) in an airport once when I was a teenager. Again, one of those incredibly, hugely, tall people!

In Hollywood I saw that actor from Miss Congeniality, you know, he was Sandra Bullock's "love interest" in the film. I totally forget his name but if you have seen the movie, you'll know who im talking about!

Oh and there was a teacher I knew (when I was very little) that was a singer for kids. And he was on "Mr. Dress Up"!

And my friend's cousin is in Nickelback...

Carla said...

Oh and I forgot to mention something!

Renee Zellweger was filming a movie on my street!! The movie is called "Chilled in Miami", which is still in the making. So I doubt we will be seeing it in theatres soon.

Clerks is one of our fave movies of all time! Actually all of his movies. Is he involved in My Name is Earl? I'm jealous.

Hey...we saw "Corky" from Life Goes On (love that show) at the airport once. I was waaaaay too excited. Seriously. I was.

You so know a lot of people. So yeah...tell David "hi" for me. ;D

My sister-in-law Emily lives in NYC, and she has a lot of brushes with famous people. She does event planning and planned a birthday party for Heath Ledger's daughter. Her husband's best friend is Alan Colmes from Hannity and Colmes, so I met him at their wedding.

Emily is in "Doc Hollywood," so she is the celebrity in the family. In the scene where Michael J. Fox is walking down the street with the mayor at night, a woman calls the mayor into her front yard to check the meat she is grilling. That's Emily! Joe and I had just started dating when that movie came out, and I had butterflies going to see it with my girlfriends. I still watch that movie when it comes on TV so I can see Emily!

Wow! This post was awesome!!! I met the owner of Carl's Junior once (yes, the real owner/president guy) while I worked at a hotel as the continental breakfast lady. He gave me a free ticket to get a meal. I still have it...somewhere.

Sadly I have ZERO connections with anyone famous. I've met some country singers, mainly because a friend of mine married a local DJ years ago, and well, they moved away, so my dreams of marrying Kenny Chesney have come to a crashing halt, LOL

OMG...of course I have to say you knew a POWER RANGER?!?! LOL Some would laugh, but both of my boys were SICK LIKE into Power Rangers...and well, I watched with them, like any good Mom would, right? LOL

COOLNESS!

And of course plenty of sports players.

Cool post!

*LOL* I love your blog. :) My only claim to fame is dancing with The Wiggles. Once, but they did invite us though! hehehe

Don't really know anyone famous specifically from my childhood but I did go to school with Sophie Monk (actress).

Thanks for the info Jennifer. You never know who will turn out to do something big. That's why it's a good idea never to piss off people.

Someday people will be saying "I knew Jennifer P when she was just blogging..."

Thanks for reading my screenplay.
