Really? You want to know about Idaho? REALLY?!?!
I guess I can be your guide then! Except for those three wild and crazy years of being just over the border in Oregon, I have lived in Idaho all my life. Well, let me clarify that--I have lived in WESTERN Idaho all my life. Idaho is a very diverse state. Up north they're really more like an extension of Washington--very environmentally conscious and all "woodsy" (and, I hear, now cleansed of that nasty white supremacy problem they had going on a few years back...). Eastern Idaho is full of a lot of farms. And central Idaho is all mountains and wilderness. SO, all I really know about is my little piece of Gem State heaven: our capital city and my home sweet home, BOISE! ( presented with pictures taken out the window of my van during the drive to class Tuesday evening--I'm not a procrastinator at all :) ....).
When French explorers first came to this valley, they exclaimed "Les Bois!" meaning "the trees", and gave us our city name, Boise. We are known as "the city of trees", and even though we are technically a desert--we take the whole tree thing pretty seriously. There's lots of them:
There's a certain gray-brown that just permeates all of this area. I guess it's pretty. Homey anyway: We have fancy shoe stores:
and exotic eateries:
and great values! (do any of YOU have one of these in your city?! :) ):
Boiseans like to show that we are "sophisticated" and "cultured" by flooding the city with lots and lots of artsy-fartsy sculpture:
This creative "goof" is a running joke:
See that blue thing on the side of the building? It's meant to represent a river with gemstones surrounding it. At night, it lights up with neon and smoke wafts out of it. It's dubbed "the steaming crack"! Lovely, eh?
Now if I've intrigued you with my description of this fair city and you decide to visit. You must eat here. It will ruin you for all other pizza:
and float the river , right through the middle of downtown (everybody does this!):
Watch a game on our infamous "smurf turf":
(when they first installed this, ducks and geese use to crash land on it--but the lettering seemed to deter that problem....)
and don't forget to leave with some of these:

Howdy from a former Boisean!
It has been a year since "I left my heart" in the beautiful, small city of Boise. Mind if I saunter around here a bit more?
Hey gf! You know I love ya'!
Didja like my crack at Idaho yesterday when BATW featured Iowa? I am stunned at the number of Americans who:
1 - confuse the two states
2 - can't find either on a map
3 - think it's the same state.
Really.
And you did Idaho proud. It looks pretty there. I wanna come visit. Thank goodness for BATW.
hugs to you and yours,
Darcy
HAHAHAHAHA! TOO FUNNY!! The Steaming Crack... haha! hee hee!
I love the Smurf Turf too... I can just picture the little birdies crashing into it... poor things. haha!
okay, so funny that Northern Idaho is more of an extension of Washington than idaho. I've always thought that too!
I've been to Idaho many a time, but only Norhtern!
My husband has family in Boise, but we've never been there.
Have fun today.
Oh yeah, i ONLY ever buy Idaho taters, they are the BEST!
A steamy crack, a giant metal circle, AND Walmart? Dang, you've got it all in Boise! Thanks for the tour :)
I've always prided myself on being a great tipper, so here you go:
Don't put all your eggs in one basket, put them in the fridge.
I lived in Boise for 5 years and loved it! I was sad to move back to the little weird planet called Utah. I actually lived in Meridian... Boise is the greatest little city! Great people, great places, fun things...LOVE IT!
love the music! hahaha
i loved reading this about idaho.
that is great!!!! Happy BATW day! Hope things are going well for you! Enjoy your day!
Idaho looks like a happening place! Thanks for showing us around...I love your potatoes so much. But I hate Walmart. Just saying.
I havne't been to Idaho since I was a child. I stayed with cousins who lived there. We slept outside and I woke up to a rooster crowing and a huge dog in my sleeping bag. I have no idea what town I was in, all I know is that my cousin was the Sheriff there!! lol
You deserve a HUMONGO tip for that!!! That was soooooo much fun....as always....so clever, and funny, and well written, and engaging, and leaving me hanging on to your every word as usual. Idaho looks nothing like I pictured so I am glad you posted those pictures....I would so love to be driving around with mountains in the distance. We have nothing. Sigh. Well I guess the White HOuse and the Smithsonian and The Capitol and The Supreme Court and all those monuments should count for something. Thank you so much for being a hostess today Jennifer. I really appreciate it.
Great tour, thanks. I've NEVER seen Wal-Mart, Payless, and Panda Express before. They really exist beyond my small borders? J/K, as you know from my first and latest country album release...Songs of Wal-Mart. Anywho, that was funny about the steaming crack. Definitely photo worthy. Great job.
Oh, the famous Jennifer P. from "Peterson's Go Public." Woo-woooooooooooooo!
Yes, you're famous.
I'd leave a tip, but only if you're giving out autographs. Please.
Great pics and tour... "exotic eateries", LOL!
Sending some love from Louisiana! Love your blog and pictures. Much Love
Congrats on being a BATW feature today! Thanks for doing a non-traditional post...it was a lot of fun! I guess I'll have to put Boise on my "to visit" list so that I can see the "steaming crack!"
you actually made idaho sound interesting!! ;) i'll come visit someday!
Dang... Now I'm seriously craving pizza. Is that wrong?
Loved the tour. Steaming crack is hilarious. Just stopping by from BATW. Congratulations on being featured today hope you have a wonderful day.
Ok, that is hilarious. The B52's came on right as I was reading this. You are a comedian! I love Idaho even more, now! :)
Oh, such memories. I wonder why it didn't make me home sick :) I remember when the turf caused a problem for the ducks.
I just can't see any reason why anyone would ever leave Boise! The Steaming Crack is enough in and of itself.
that was so much fun to read! Thanks for posting and sharing all about your exotic and fun places! I loved it!
I love Idaho!
Thanks for the tour! ;D
What a tour. Driving down Overland is my guess :). I sometimes feel like I have lived in two different states between growing up in eastern Idaho and living for the past 15 years in Boise. I laugh sometimes when people call the foothills around Boise mountains because I grew up in the shadows of the Grand Tetons and Big Hole mountains in Teton Valley.
And the steaming crack, I can't remember the last time I actually saw it lit up and steaming. Flying Pie, definitely good pizza, although I haven't been there for years. I may have to go again soon.
I love how you are so creative with your words. Very cool.
So fun to get to drive with you and see all those familiar sites. I miss Boise. And Halle's favorite part about coming to Boise is driving past the steaming crack. She loves it! :)
Thanks so much for the tour! Love the photos, too! It must just be fanTAbulous to live with all that beautiful scenery, 24/7! I've got a Recipe Week going on over at my place, so please stop on by if you get the chance!
Too funny. I've only been to Idaho once ... and it was to hmmm a city I don't remember. But I did fly into Boise to drive there. And said city had a really seedy red light district that I accidentally drove into :) That was fun.
I looooove the steaming crack. It always entertaing me how some things sound SO good on paper but then just don't cut it when it comes to execution!
Dropping by from BATW. Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to give us a tour of Idaho! Now I'm off to get me some pizza (although I can guarantee it won't be as good as yours!)
Thanks of for the tour! Funny and loved the music. I didn't turn off my speakers as I usually do on musical blogs! Love it. Congrats on being featured for BATW.
Loving the smurf turf!! Happy BATW day!
Thanks for all the great pictures! I adore your site, so cute! I always have to make comments about the smurf field, and the next time I see a game there, I'm going to make sure I tell my husband about the ducks and geese.
Thanks for the tour!!
Sweet!
I loved this post...love learn more about the places I haven't been to (dont we all?). It seems beautiful there....
Although I live in an area everyone steretypes as being completely flat...its so not true! We also have many trees and its very green here in summer.
You've made me want to do a post like this too for my blog! But all I have revealed so far to the blogger public is that I live in North America...HAHA! Pretty vague...
very fun post jennifer...and i think that procrastination works for you. :)
i've never been that far north in ID...just went to Ricks so that was about it for me...all south-eastern ID for me...great tour!
Thanks for the interesting tidbits about Idaho. I could go for some pizza now. I wonder if the girls and I would have time to get to your #1-rated Boise restaurant and back in time to pick up our boys up from school?
Hey! Blog around the world has made it to Idaho...and of course, I know two famous people! I love how you and Elena took two different approaches. When I was thinking of Elena and you posting this, I thought about what I would say as I ran over (yet again) another one of those stinkin' goat head thorns! I think I would write about those, and all of the bike tire tubes I've gone through. It's time for the green goupy stuff.
This is so fun to learn about Idaho through your perspective, and if I ever get the "unclinched fist syndrome" under control (yep, I'm a tightwad), I might splurge and try out that pizza joint. It's so funny, but from the way the sign looks, you'd never think there was anything in there worth tryin'. Was that a mean thing I just said?
Anyway, great post!
Ok! I'm ready to visit! Fancy shoe stores, exotic eateries, pizza AND potatoes! All my absolute faves!
You gave a great tour! I've bookmarked you and HAVE to come back!
Your pictures and commentary made me want to come to that lovely state. The only thing holding me back is my "hatred" for Boise State ruining Oklahoma's bowl game (fiesta bowl) a couple of years ago! darn them! haha
Greetings from Wisconsin!! Congratulations on your BATW feature. I hope that you enjoy your day in the sun. Idaho looks like a really great place to live! I am surprised that is it so diverse too:-) Interesting:-)
Happy BATW day, Jennifer. I love the tour about Boise. I only wish we did had a walmart where I'm at. At least we have the same fancy shoe stores.
Miki--
The restaurant is nothing but a hole in the wall place---and yet no one cares because they can make pizza like no one's business! Hey---I think we'll go there before our dollar movie/ golf cart excursion. No one should live in Idaho and not have eaten a Flying Pie! :)
I'm seriously moving to Boise. You made it sound awesome. And full of all that exotic culture, too! Lol. Thanks for the tour!
thanks for the tour. I love the pictures
What a hilarious tour! I'm so jealous you have the fancy shoe places and restaurants. :) My good friend lives in Boise and she loves to tell everyone how wonderful it is. I'm starting to think she might be right. Thank you for the tour! (visiting from L.A.)
Thanks for the awesome tour! I have only ever been to Cour de Lain. We lived in WA for 5 years and this was one of our favorite vacation spots.
Congratulations on your feature! All this time and I didn't even realize that you were from Idaho (not that that really means anything to me since I'm a southern girl whose never been 'round your parts'). Thanks for showing us Boise!
Oh my, metal circles, smurf turf, steaming crack; you Boise people got it going on. :D I have never been in that area of our country; I would love to visit someday.
Lisa Q
PETA alert - I know it's not nice but the part about ducks & geese crash landing had me blowing diet coke out my nostrils....
I just stopped by and didn't realize you were being spotlighted today!!! The infamous blue turf...we had actually heard that about ducks and geese but hoped it was only rumor :( Glad to hear they fixed the problem :) Nice job on your spotlight :) Hope you are havin a good week :)
This tour was SO much fun! I loved every second of it, and cried a little when it was over .. I'm throwing money at my screen for your tip! :o)
Jennifer!!! THat's what ELENA said! She said it was a total dive, but the pizza was delicious!
What would the owner think of all of this talk of their joint? I guess they (like everyone else) can see their sign just as well. They value food, not image, and it's just as well since everyone knows about it....but me!
So, YES. We will DEFINITELY drive a crazy mini machine of some sort (I seriously can't wait for that one....seriously), and we will be partially excited to eat this pizza...Elena knows how I'm not into food that much, so I hope you're not disappointed if I say, "eh, it's alright...", and lastly, go to the dollar movie. This cheap friend needs to save her pennies. Thanks for bending on that one for me!
By the time we actually do all of these things, we might have a list a mile long of all the things we want to do!!! I say we keep a running tally of the MUST DO's, down to the "eh's". Elena LOVES to go to restaurants and try new things, and I do it for her, and to her credit, she's shown me some pretty good stuff. You'll have to tell me if this pizza place is worth it enough to be at the top of your list, and then I'll go....for you!
My pick? THE GOLF CART/HYSTER sneaking slash driving experience for sure!!! Oh how I can't wait. I seriously wish we could be on the job for a day somewhere and really "do something" with the hyster.
Oh how fun...
I've rambled enough...sorry everyone.
P.S. Thanks for the heads up on my blog about your comment...I would have never found it amidst the sea of commenters today! I feel special...
Anyway, enjoy your Blog Around the World day...this is so fun.
wal-mart? no, we in louisiana don't have those. how lucky are you? i love your blog!
Boise looks just like the exotic place I would like to visit someday, thanks for the wonderful tour.
Greetings from North Carolina! Thanks for the tour!
I grew up in Utah..I always thought Idaho was really boring.
My grandparents lived in Idaho - near Sandpoint. They had a mountian for a backyard. Oh, Idaho is the most beautiful place I've seen yet. Very nice. I keep trying to get The Man to transfer to Boise, but so far, he won't budge. You have a lovely state.
That's so interesting that it's considered desert! My daughter just learned the other day that deserts are classified by rainfall not heat.
I've heard of those WalMart stores but haven't seen one. They're legendary!
Great tour!
Boise sure sounds like fun. Smurf turf, hilarious, poor birds.
Thanks for the tour of your lovely city, from your car. Maybe next time we can float the river. :P
Hello from Louisiana via BATW! Nice places to visit, looks like. Thanks for the warm welcome :D
Hello fro BATW in CA. LOVE THIS POST AND TOUR! Can't get enough of your sense of humor. I LOVE POTATOES!!!
Stopping by via BATW...I live in WA (Seattle area) so we've been to Idaho a couple of times...love those potatoes too! :)
Happy BATW Day :o) Thanks for the great tour!
I want to go to Boise now!!! I actually have friends there, too. I'll get up there eventually :)
Hi from Louisiana! Love the blog!
That was awesome! Thanks
That was great! I had no idea Boise was so sophisticated! My goodness, a Payless AND a Panda Express.
Look at all your comment love! I have a friend that travels to Boise for business - and she says you can buy potatoes in vending machines at the airport. Truth or fiction? :-)
What a FANTASTIC tour for all us BATWers!! Very creative! You have all the best places to eat and shop! :) Oh how I remember those nights of heading to class and trying to do my fun stuff as well. Never seems to be enough time in the day eh! Thanks for taking the time to entertain us!

Okay, so I know this is like every day stuff for you, but I CAN'T get over these comments. CRAZY! And the counter just keeps going up. No wonder you wrote the post you did last time.
Hi from Wisconsin! That was such a fun tour. I hope to visit for real one day.
Greetings from BATW by way of Georgia. I really enjoyed visiting Idaho through your eyes. I haven't visited there in about 15 years. Maybe one day I'll get back to the part of the country. Keep up the good work. I liked the open letter too, you sound like me sometimes.
Love from Georgia (no french cheek kisses here, just warm, friendly hugs),
Amy ;)
That was so entertaining!!! I giggled my way through your post. I absolutely love the pictures that you took on your drive to school on Tuesday night - classic!! :)
Fabulous blog! Zipping through by way of BATW and I'm so glad I came.
Your perspective was fun to see! I would love to visit Idaho sometime. The spuds look delish.
What a great tour!! I'm pretty sure Wal Mart is an urban legend and the photo you have is altered. I'd have to investigate though :>
Thanks for the tour!
i love idaho... and i love that goof sign... i know exactly where that is...
i also adore the look and feel of your blog...
Thank you for this tour. Truly exceptional!
Woo Hoo! I'm commenter #80! Wow, what does it feel like to get THAT many comments on one single post? Granted, it's an awesome post though. Makes me want to visit Idaho. I read Darcy's comment about Idaho and Iowa being confused for each other. Include Indiana in that mix. I grew up there and now that I live in Georgia, people ALWAYS ask me which "I" state I'm originally from. Idaho? Iowa? Indiana? Illinois?
I love your description of the different parts of Idaho...my best friend is currently living in Post Falls and you're right...it's totally an extention of Washington. :)
And feel free to use WWW in any way shape or form! That was sweet of you to ask...we both know you didn't have to. And teaching a blogging class!!! How FUN!!!! You HAVE to tell us how that goes. I kind of wish I was in it. ;)
Happy BATW day....a little late!!! Love the post!
My husband was born in Boise, Idaho. I'm going to have to show him this post !!! Love it, thanks for the introduction to his birthplace :-)
rofl, love your writing style. You have a great sense of humor. Thanks for the tour! ;)
I'm a day late, but I made it! Gonna try to catch up on recent posts, too. I always enjoy my visits here.
Hello from CA!
Visiting from BATW...
First up, your Playlist gifted me with Tony Bennett's version of "Steppin' Out with my Baby"...love it! I must add it to my Playlist...
Second...I enjoyed your Boise post. The steaming crack is pretty funny...what an interesting gaffe.
Hope you enjoyed your spotlight day!
My step-sister oversaw the artist's concept & installation of the "butt crack" as we call it. I wonder if it looked like that on paper. It does look all bubbly & cool at night. If I squint I can see a river, can't you? :-) Love Boise. Love the country too.
I lived in Boise for a few years growing up. Your pictures looks nothing like what I remember! We had left, they had just opened up an Target AND the mall. THE mall. I don't know if there is more than one now or not. I remember it being so pretty all the time, no matter the season. I live in Texas. There are no seasons.
I lived on Mountain View Drive and went could see all the new California homes being built in the mountains across from me and the race track below me.I remember Mr. Albertson gave out FULL SIZE candy bars at Halloween. When we moved to Texas, potatoes were the funniest thing to ask me about. Sheesh!
Never been to Idaho! Enjoyed the tour though and it made me laugh!
I live in the Finger Lakes Region of upstate NY. Maybe I'll give a tour since many foreign bloggers who read my blog seem to think I live in or near NY city. (It takes me about 6 hours to drive there)
Funny--I thought thet THING was a crack in the building too. And I was so surpirsed to see all the trees, and can never look at our store-bought, frozen (yet still passable) Freschetta pizzas the same way again. Thanks a lot.
We're so coming back again.
