music you should be listening to, but probably aren't

If you've ever read my profile, you'll see my little running joke: My taste in music runs the gamut from The Ramones to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. And it's true! Of course, it goes ALLLLL THE WAY AROUND modern country music, but it makes port everywhere else. Pretty crazy for someone who didn't even have a stereo in her house until she was 12, huh? I could go on to reminisce how the first song I ever remember hearing was "Don't it Make My Brown Eyes Blue" by Crystal Gail---I was 2, or how I have a freaky brain that can recite to you lyrics from just about every song I've heard more than once, but I won't :).....

We'll just get down to it---here are some of my latest favorites that SHOULD be your favorites too......

1. PT Walkley and the Adventures of Track Rabbit.
Oh how I love this New York band! Why they are not a household name is beyond me. I can't find their stuff ANYWHERE but YouTube, and the place I first discovered them via a friend-- on My Space. Their song "Up the Walls" is now one of my all time favorites. I could only find a badly recorded You Tube version of it, but "Lovely World" (the one in the video) isn't too bad either. Not quite as catchy. If you happen to find "Up the Walls" in some other downloadable format, would you let me know? My playlist wants it soooooo bad! (p.s.--I just discovered that itunes has the whole album but I only have an mp3 player, not an ipod :( )

2. Paco Pena.

As if I wasn't on the outskirts of mainstream musical tastes enough with my deep affinity for jazz, now I've taken to Flamenco music (!) I based a whole Pandora station off Paco Pena's "Santo" and now I do my baking and cleaning by it--- feeling like an exotic Spanish dancer! Oh yeah!...there's a lot of dancing involved :) ! This music also feels very "autumnal"--so maybe just try it out for the season?!

3. Indigo Swing.

I am so sorry I didn't discover this quintessentially "cool" East Coast swing band till recently. Now I've heard the lead singer, Johnny Boyd, has left to go solo. It really is his darling voice that makes this band. Guess I'll get in line with the other fans and petition them to get back together! Meanwhile---this is who is playing right now, so enjoy (or turn it up already ;)! )

Now enlighten me fellow music lovers----who should I be listening to that I'm not?

I really like the PT...Track Rabbit. I'll look for their stuff.

Do you listen to Sufjan Stevens and Coldplay? Two of my favourites.

I have a whole list for you on my playlist on my blog. :)

Ok, I admit, I must get out of my Contemporary Christian music bubble...if it hasn't been played on KLOVE, I probably haven't heard it. I am always up for something new, my friend. :)
Oh, and you know....that you better put NC on your places to visit. You kiddos would have a ball, and we'd paint the town...um....red? Tarheel Blue?

my kids have mp3 players and we buy from Itunes all the time. It is fairly easy to convert the format over. I can't remember the name of the program I use but if you just google it you will be pleasantly surprised. I think I paid $30. Of course it is lost on my old laptop and I haven't taken time to put it on my new one.

summer--
Yeah, I have itunes on my computer and actually bought the PT Walkley album last night. I would LOVE a way to get it off there and onto my mp3. Thanks for the heads up. You're such a smarty pants :)!

hey don't feel bad--i have neither an ipod or an mp3 player---however do i listen to music? :)
i think that my msuic tastes are as eclectic as yours---i like most everything, and i think that i'm really like this indigo jazz...this kind of music is perfect for dinnertime and background music(though it does make me want to be in a 1940's nightclub all dolled up with a fabulous guy to dance with!)
i think that i'm gonna have to try me some flamenco music and see where the beat takes me! :)

I love this music. I too have a great rang of musical tastes. But I do not have theme music for sooking and cleaning. I am truly jealous......
Maroon5 is one of my favorites.

Good heavens, I'm sure I can't introduce you to anyone new. That's your job to me. :) However, I do love the Hank Dogs, do you listen to them?

iTunes onto an MP3...
My kids buy all their music from iTunes and you don't need a program to convert it. After you download your songs then transfer them on to a re-usable CD. Then load that CD back onto your computer but under save as make sure you save the songs as MP3 songs. Tada! No money spent and your songs are now MP3 songs.
Smiles!

While I am not the biggest country fan, one of my favs is SheDaisy. They write their own stuff and have quite the advanced vocabulary. And it's real stuff, you know? About their loves and losses and divorces and it isn't cheesy.

For that same reason, I like the early John Mayer stuff. Really great images in the songs if you really listen. Also, I love Michael Buble, Jim Brickman (for the bathtub), Avril Lavigne, and I like the All American Rejects.

I love that I can make a random playlist from all my CDs. I downloaded all hundred and something CDs I had into iTunes and now I can load them to my iPod whenever. I can also put a playlist together and then just play from my computer and my little speakers. It's great for cleaning and reading.

What a cute blog!! I came by way of SITS and thought I say hello. I love the design. Oh, my husband would be in love with you and your music genious... that I am not. I'll have to check out these bands though, and add a song or 2 to my ipod. :)

I can't imagine that anything that I listen to would be new to you. Especially after seeing that you had Squirrel Nut Zippers on your playlist last week.

Have you heard of the Subdudes? What about Neko Case?

I don't have an ipod but my husband does. I like pretty much any music:-)

I bet you'd really like the Puppini Sisters, a great starter track is "And She Sang" beautiful, jazz style, mixed with 30's swing. I bet you'll like it!

KatBouska said...

You're right. I'm not listening to any of those.

And I don't plan on it.

What am I listening to?

I don't have anything new to add...I think I've got a little Faith Hill in the car right now...love me some Faith.

What an expansive taste in music you have, thanks for the suggestions.

She's a Lady by Tom Jones is my FAVORITE song to listen to while cooking and cleaning. I am always sure to use my headphones to avoid "torturing" the rest of the household.

Wow, I guess I better curb my habit of listening to podcasts and find some new music. I've got no music recommendations but I'm enjoying reading about everyone else's. :)

Thanks for the tips....I love jazz too!

Where do you guys find all this stuff! I am like Jen at Balancing Beauty and Bedlam...I am stuck in my Contemporary Christian stuff...and High School Musical and Hannah Montana....I need to expand my horizons! I like the music on your playlist right now.

I am afraid I have fallen behind the times, as well. For the longest time I always yielded our car time to the children's music or DVDs, but this fall I am spending so much time in the car shuttling the children from place to place that I just feel like I must listen to adult music. The children were resistant to this at first, but now Emma will squeal with delight each time a new song starts, "Oh, dis my fav'ite song!" So maybe I'll be more culturally relevant next time you ask!

Well as I have three girls, I can no longer listen to my own music so it revolves around my girls.

Now I can do a list of don't listen (cause I am sick of them)
1. Hanna Montanna/ Mily Cirus
2. Jonas Brothers
3. High School Musicals
4. Any group or person that has been on Disney channel in the last two years!

Oh Yikes, forgot to turn off the sound when I visited ;)

Oh Angels girl!

FIrst my man Alan Rickman, and now my music? Am I going to have to shun you ala Dwight :)?!

Jennifer--should I be scared? I think so! You have the memory of miraculous proportions. This is the second time I've heard of your fabulous memory. This first was through Elena. "Oooh, she remembers EVERYTHING!"

Now I'm nervous. What have I said? What have I done? What have you remembered with that mind of yours?

I used to sit with my favorite songs and play them over and over again until I had the words down (and the harmonies). This took me for forever!!!

Okay, you and I differ a little in styles of music. You always surprise me with the things you like. I would NEVER have expected it. You're much more rocker chic (meant with much adoration of course) than I would have ever guessed.

Do you know that since I've blogged, I walk around looking at women thinking, "I wonder what she's really like, because you can never judge by a cover", and I thought I could...I really thought I could.

Nope, don't think it anymore. Who's the closet motorcycle rider woman? Who's the one enjoying her kitchen with her one millionth recipe (Emily)? Who's the quiet one who rocks out to a good song in her living room????? HMMMMM? Anyone, anyone...because we all know it's Jennifer! The girls we wouldn't have guessed!

I've blabbed enough...

Miki said...

Okay, obviously at 2:00 a.m. (which I just realized it is) the blabbering juices start to flow! Sorry, I need to go to bed! This blogging addiction has to stop at some point!

Anyway, I wanted you to know that some of the songs that are on your playlist are SO addicting. They have SO grown on me. I'm going to play them at my site. I hope it's fun for you to hear which ones I love now.

I'm listening to that "Idaho" song right now. I heard it in Adam Sandler's "The Wedding Singer" and lit up as I thought of you. "Hey, that's Jennifer's Idaho post song."

:) I love a range of music (including 'soppy boyband stuff - adore Westlife) from pop & classic rock right through to jazz and classical.

One artist I HIGHLY recommend is a young singer from Australia called Eran James. He is fantastic...you wouldn't believe the voice on the kid - his first album was recorded when he was 15. He sings a range of soul, blues, funk, pop etc; the famous James Brown even remarked "Man, you're blacker than me!" when he heard Eran sing. :)

Jennifer I share much of your taste in music. I LOVE music! All kinds. But I have a feeling you know about more bands than I do.

Jen said...

My taste in music is similar to yours. I too avoid country. The old story tellers are good though. I'm terrible with exact names and titles and I don't have an ipod or mp3 player either.
Thanks for visiting Canada yesturday. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Have a great week!

Hey, there! I wouldn't call myself a lurker... just a looker... well, that doesn't sound modest, does it? What I mean is, I have stopped by once or twice before. HOWEVER, I stopped in today and found your fun little comments on music and it hit me: we are kindred music spirits!! Never, NEVER have I come across another person with This Mortal Coil playing on their blog (in fact, in my 15 years of fandom, I've met two people who knew TMC)! And I already love all of the music you mentioned in this post. That seals it for me. I'll be back. :)
