shoveling snow with buddha

In the usual iconography of the temple or the local Wok

you would never see him doing such a thing,

tossing the dry snow over the mountain

of his bare, round shoulder,

his hair tied in a knot,

a model of concentration.

Sitting is more his speed, if that is the word

for what he does, or does not do.

Even the season is wrong for him.

In all his manifestations, is it not warm and slightly humid?

Is this not implied by his serene expression,

that smile so wide it wraps itself around the waist of the universe?

But here we are, working our way down the driveway,

one shovelful at a time.

We toss the light powder into the clear air.

We feel the cold mist on our faces.

And with every heave we disappear

and become lost to each other

in these sudden clouds of our own making,

these fountain-bursts of snow.

This is so much better than a sermon in church,

I say out loud, but Buddha keeps on shoveling.

This is the true religion, the religion of snow,

and sunlight and winter geese barking in the sky,

I say, but he is too busy to hear me.

He has thrown himself into shoveling snow

as if it were the purpose of existence,

as if the sign of a perfect life were a clear driveway

you could back the car down easily

and drive off into the vanities of the world

with a broken heater fan and a song on the radio.

All morning long we work side by side

me with my commentary

and he inside the generous pocket of his silence,

until the hour is nearly noon

and the snow is piled high all around us;

then, I hear him speak.

After this, he asks,

can we go inside and play cards?

Certainly, I reply, and I will heat some milk

and bring cups of hot chocolate to the table

while you shuffle the deck,

and our boots stand dripping by the door.

Aaah, says the Buddha, lifting his eyes

and leaning for a moment on his shovel

before he drives the thin blade again

deep into the glittering white snow.

~Billy Collins

****I love that I can trick y'all into reading a little contemporary poetry every now and then....or at least scrolling quickly through a little contemporary poetry :) ****

It is FREEZING here at Providence Cottage (did you know my house had a name?--it's very Jane Austen-esque). Highs barely into the teens. Cold seeped into all my bones. Windows all drafty. But still I refuse to put the heater above 67 degrees. I'm stubborn like that..... And also now sick with the sniffles...... So if you're looking for something to comment on and thought my Buddha poem was just *weird*....then you're welcome to tell me to get better soon :) .
and have YOU been sick yet this (almost) winter?

I maaaay not..... or.... maybe have been sick this winter...but why jinx it here a week before Christmas??...No, not me...I'm not feeling smug or non-sniffly at all...
But You, you overachiever....you totally tricked me...because I think you could write an entertaining grocery list....so feel better soon so we can read what you'll be buying at Costco next...

I thought you wrote that. I was thinking "wow, she is good". You are a sneaky one.

I hope you feel better soon. I think you need to go back to Cal., ya know just to help you get rid of your sniffles. I think its easier to do in the warmer weather. It has NOTHING to do with Dimples being there.

I love the name of your house. I think every house should have a name.. but I can't come up with the right one for ours. We've been in it for almost two years and nothing sounds right that we come up with.

Ok maybe I'm the weird one but that poem gave me teary eyes. Moving from Utah to Texas I MISS the snow...you captured the moment (or hours!) perfectly. Perfectly (for emphasis)!

I thought you wrote it too! I was bummed that some dude wrote it. PFFT. I still liked it though :)

I like that your house has a name. Mine would be called Buddy.

It's a rental and I don't like it much so it's Buddy. LOL ;)

I'm going to comment on a snow shoveling Buddha...because that image is one I would've never dreamed up on my own.

"Can we go inside and play cards?" I'd tell him, "NO!" 'Cause he'd win everytime. Unless he played with Jesus.

Girl, you have started my morning off with a cheery bang...thanks! And feel better!

p.s. Yes, I've been sick--hello, I took 4 days off blogging due to illness and was barely well enough to fly off to California to see Tiff and Heather. Now that is SICK, I tell you. Ugh.

I love that you named your house. I need to name my apartment...

I've had a "cold" but I don't really count that as sick....

GET WELLER SOON!

I love to sneak and peek at your blog every once in a while. Sorry to hear that you're sickish. Our family has already passed Round One of the season--we had pink eye, an ear infection, stomach virus, strep throat, asthma flareup and The Cold all within one week (from various member of the household), 'Tis the season for flu shots, they say, though I've got mixed feelings on the issue? What do you think? A necessity or no?

you got me! I read it! :-)

So sorry you're feeling under the weather. I have not been "sick". Just lots of sinus pressure and ear aches. Hope you're over this soon!

LenaLoo said...

Yup, been there, done that, and probably going to get sick again if I don't get some sleep!

LenaLoo said...

Oh and get better soon lol :)

Yep, I read it too and I LOVED it! Ever since I went to Singapore I have had a thing with Buddha. I had the HARDEST time finding a souviner Christmas ornament from there so I bought a little wooden Buddha that I was going to drill a hanger into to hang on my tree, but I thought it was just a little sacreligious, so I opted for my bell instead. But my Buddha sits in my laundry room cupboard and everytime I change my tablecloths I have to get him out. I love him. Maybe I'll stick him in my pocket when I shovel the sidewalk this afternoon. :) Sorry you're sick. Yes, I've been sick this season. I had that nasty 2 week crud, the same one Miss Debbie had. It was awful. Get well soon! Maybe a nice camera chat with MM will make you feel better. :)

I liked you poem, seriously!
and.....you might wanna at least turn your heat up to 69, come on girl....it might make you feel better.
I'm very very sorry you're sick. I have been sick as well and it was NOT fun, I was on an antibiotic and am still coughing and feel the need to have my lungs dry cleaned.
Have good day, turn up your heat, drink chicken noodle soup and get better!

Sniff, sniff, cough cough. I am trying to read through my red eyes that are dripping with tears and my nose is dripping with, well, what else does a nose drip with.

Get better soon!

Some people swear by flu shots... I'm not one of them. The only year I actually got one, when I was pregnant with Quincy I was sick THREE seperate times in one month. It was horrible. I refuse to get one since, and have been healthy as a horse (where did that saying come from?) Anyways, we've lucked out so far being sick this winter.

Get well soon!

I am sorry you are sick. Providence Cottage looks good dressed in white. My own house is sparkly white today. Who knew I could get excited for snow! I need to go take pictures of it now.

HA! you got the cold weather....it is above freezing today and i'm NOT wearing a coat (just a long-sleeved t-shirt and a wool sweater--less bulky)
i shouldn't be laughing too mcuh thoug, b/c i'm pretty sure that what you've got in the clouds and the wind is headin' my way in just a few days time :)

So does this mean it's time to meet Bachelor #3 by making another trip to SoCal? Or beg Bachelor #1 (aka "MM") to have you come visit him again?

Great post! Again! Loved it. And I do love the Providence Cottage, lovely name, lovely house.

Your post made me miss home. As you know I am from Finland and it gets REALLY cold there as well... I remember how I used to dislike (don't want to say hate, lol) that. But now, after living in this extreme heat for some time, I must say that there is NOTHING better than a nice cold winter day. You put all your hats and gloves and jackets on, 3 pairs of socks and your father's boots, go out for a walk, and then come back inside, inside the WARM house, and have a cup of hot chocolate. There is nothing better. Trust me. I would give a lot to spend the winter back at home. I truly, truly miss that.

Oh, and get better soon Jennifer!!!

What an interesting poem. Really thought you wrote that - you're very sneaky. I had to look at the name twice to make sure.

Yes, I've been sick. Just got over a cold. My mom says it's because we keep the heat at 64 during the day and 60 at night. And it's been -15 or maybe as warm as 0 during the days here. Talk about coldness in the bones. I've been sneaking the furnace up to 68 at least once a day just to sit in warmth for a few minutes. :)

You know...I think I like weird. I love to try and figure out what the heck he may, or may not, be saying, when he says, and doesn't say.....

stuff.

lol.

I certainly thought you wrote that all the way through. You could do it!! I know you could.

Yes, you may know that my only culture comes from you....my cultured Jennifer Peterson friend.

P.S. Loved the music.

Totally thought you wrote the poem, as I'm sitting here with my cup of coffee and york patty.
Loved it.
Sorry for your sniffels. We have a pellet stove for heating, and in the mornings our house has been a whopping 51. But now, since the output was accidentally moved to high, my meter reads my house is an above comfortable 78.
Toasty.

Knock on wood, I've been healthy so far. probably because I never go out of my house because everything is so stinkin far away. :)
Thanks for coming over this morning for cookie decorating! It was fun chatting with you and getting a designer's opinion of my house. And thanks for sending that blog link. I LOVE her house!!! Oh to have so much talent. I'm inspired to become more crafty and stock the schoolroom with crafty stuff.
Have a great weekend!

Glad you have a little time off school to rest your bones...that's what they need...too bad Moms can't really ever BE sick :( I hope you feel better real soon!

Well then, get well soon :)! I hope and pray that you'll be good and healthy at least before Christmas!
I've been a bit sick this winter. Nothing too serious yet. I get bad in spring...hives breakout...and my nose is constantly wet...ew and EW!

Right now, it is -27 degrees Celsius where I live :(. Terrible.

Modern poetry - I remember that class! Can't say I was a big fan. Robert Frost is a little more my speed. :)

I quite enjoyed your Buddha poem! And we have all been passing illnesses around here like the Sunday dinner rolls. Enough! I say.

New to your blog. I think you are awesome. Homeschooling would be hard for me. I give you a lot of credit. You have a beautiful family. We passed the flu around our house two weeks ago. That was after the colds. So yes, the sickness has come and gone. Have a Merry Christmas.
