11 years ago today

I became a mom for the first time.

I was nearly two weeks over my due date and dilated to a whole, stinking "1". Pitocin would soon be my only remaining option.....and cause me to start on the journey of a 17 hour labor. With 2 epidurals. And 3 hours of pushing. And a doctor who actually threw a fit in the delivery room because he was made to get out of bed in the middle of the night and I "wasn't doing 'it' right(!!!)".

And then there were shouts of "clot her! She's bleeding out!".... and the last thing I saw before I threw up and passed out was the sweetest face I'd ever seen. He wasn't making a peep---just staring at me like he knew me. I will never forget that look. It wasn't until 6 hours later when I came to that I finally held baby Zane for the first time. He cried like a tiny donkey. He smelled like every good thing in the world. It felt like my arms were made just to hold him.
********

*********

Crazy.
*********
I use to have to hold his hand to make sure he stayed with me. And now he can ride his bike around the block to his friend's house by himself.

I use to have to stay near him while he held his little brothers---just to be safe. And now he can babysit all of them while I run to grab milk or take a walk. He doesn't even ask to get paid.

He is naturally good at EVERYTHING---like his dad. And creative---like his Mom. He started reading the Calvin and Hobbes books alone when he was 5 1/2--- he just taught himself by following along with the words while I would read to him. He learned to play the piano as well as I could after my 5 years of lessons---in 16 months. He beats grown-ups at chess and Guitar Hero and wii anything. He taught me how to use Powerpoint. He cares deeply for his faith and his brothers and his friends and people in general.
And he even picks shirts like this out---all by himself:

Happy Birthday Zaney! It was a wild, wild ride to get you here but you have made my life so complete. I love you more than I could ever manage to say. You are a good boy :). I hope you have the happiest 11th year ever.

xoxo (and you're not too old to get those either!)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ZANE!!!!

Jen, what a sweet sweet post! If you haven't already, please print this post out and put it away and give it to him when he is older for a birthday present. You should write these every year to all of your boys on their birthdays. My goodness, a mother's love is one of the most beautiful things this life has to offer...

Happy Birthday! It is the most amazing opportunity we have to be moms. It stops my breath each day when I take the time to realize what a little miracle they are.

Happy Birthday to Zane who, oh-my-heck, is going to be a lady killer. Whoever snags him (in 20 years of course) will be so lucky. And they'll have the coolest mother-in-law, ever, who was sporting some pretty mad sunglasses when her boys were little. ;)

Hip hip hooray, It's Zane's birthday!! I remember the first time I met Zane. I think he was 10months old. I knew that with parents as beautiful as he had, Zane could be nothing but handsome!! :)

Mommy love is just gushing from you. Blogs are so fun in that they let us express feelings we all have for our babies. You made me realize that birthdays for our children are not only great celebrations for their entry into life, but they're also great reminders of the huge changes we all went through as mommies when they arrived. What a splendid thing to think about today.

Happy birthday little (well, not so little any more I guess) Zane. Mommies all over can appreciate. amd almost be jealous of, how good you are.

That is the sweetest! I almost cried b/c I know how you feel. He sounds like my sweet oldest boy...great at everything like Dad and creative like mom. He's darling and I love the picture of you two together, it's priceless and you should blow it up and hang it somewhere special. My boy will be home in about 20 min.....I think I'll kiss his little face off.

Very Happy B-Day to Zane!!!

Ummm...do you believe in arranged marriages? You don't know me, but I've lurked on your blog for a while now. I have a nine year old daughter that would be the perfect age for him after his mission. :) She's really cute too!

Okay, I'm clearly hormonal as I'm crying at everyone's posts today, but MAN this made me cry! I think because he so sounds like my Noah, and I know it'll all go by so quickly and I just want him to be little forever.

Happy birthday, Zane!

I hope you had a great day Zane!!! And keep being great to your mom for many years to come... she sure loves you!!

Amazing! Happy birthday, young man. And Happy 11th mommy-birthday to you too. Becoming a mom changes our lives so completely and so frustratingly and so beautifully. I can't imagine how any woman can be a mom and not feel closer to God. What a blessed family you have!
