friday fotos...thanksgiving day (and another traditional minor disaster)

~Here is the story of Thanksgiving 2008. ~

This is the third year I've had my family gather here for Thanksgiving dinner. And every year, there's been some minor disaster we've had to get through.

Year #1: Everyone but my family and a friend's family gets violently ill Thanksgiving night-- so ill that a few even go to the hospital. It was assumed it was from the deep fried turkey prepared by said friends. And somehow everyone still came back and ate here come Christmas time! :)

Year #2 (last year): It took me 3 attempts to make my Nutella Brownie Pumpkin Pie. I burned one, put the wrong kind of pumpkin in another, and then the third never set up right-- so we ended up eating the burned one. Well--at least a few of us did. This is what happened to most of it......

and also our neighbor's dog, whom we were *dogsitting* for at the time, decided to pick an hour before Thanksgiving to have a seizure. (he was ok--but it was time consuming enough caring for him to cause the burnt pie).

So, now we're to YEAR #3......the year I'm glad I buy my paper towels at Costco, because some things require a whole roll of them to clean up.

Everything was going along really smoothly. I made mesquite roasted, sage rubbed turkey breasts. Stuffing (out of a box--because even homemade doesn't taste better!). Green beans with lemon. Rolls. and two kinds of potatoes:

I'm not a gravy girl, so I make these instead..... garlic, Parmesan, rosemary smashed red potatoes. Oh my head! are they ever delish! I think it has something to do with the stick of butter and the 1/2 cup of cream that goes into them.... anyway--

Guests arrived.

and everyone ended up in the kitchen. Typical!

Here is one of my brothers (the other is a race car driver and NEVER around!) and my sister. (Did you even know I had siblings? I know I only tend to blog about them in flashback posts--but they are still living!)

Do you see that pitcher in front of them? Take a good look at it. It's old---like from my bridal shower old--and it was starting to crack--but I thought it would be fine to use. Plus, it was so pretty.....

Everyone was eating and having a grand old time, when my nephew (17) decided to pour himself a drink. And the handle broke off the above mentioned cracked crystal pitcher---leaving a gaping glass hole---which spewed forth cranberry juice/ Sprite mixture. A LOT of it. All over everyone and everything!!! There was much laughter as we all crawled around on the floor trying to clean it up. My nephew's girlfriend hopped up to try and help and in doing so, spilled her drink all over herself as well. My nephew had to eat the remainder of Thanksgiving dinner in some homemade kilt he concocted out of my bath towel and his belt while his pants were in the dryer. At least I let his girlfriend borrow a pair of my pants---so no towel kilt for her!

Here's what was left of the pitcher. And did I mention how thankful I am to have wood floors? Can you imagine a pitcherful of cranberry juice on carpet?! Oh my!....

This made everything feel better. Pumpkin cobbler with cinnamon-caramel whipped cream.

Everything ends happily with dessert.

Can't wait to see what year #4 has up its sleeve. :)

***Hope your Thanksgiving was blessed by the presence of your family and friends. Love to you all!***

Too bad you don't have a picture of the towel/kilt.

Oh, Wow! That is SOME excitement, isn't it? At least you guys were able to laugh about it. Those kind of memories are the best in the long run.

I second Lizzy's comment about not having a picture of towel kilt...why not?

It could be worse, I mean...
*green jello molds
*senile great aunts (Bethany)
*cats who chew electrical wire
*Uncle Lewis who sets the Christmas tree on fire
*Crazy Cousin dumping his chemical toilet into your sewer
*and a dog named after nasal discharge under your table yacking on a bone.

Yep, could'a been a whole lot worse.

Glad you can laugh about it!

I know everyone! I can't believe I didn't photograph the kilt either! I was clearing dishes when he went and put his dry pants on.

It's not so crazy to think that there might be a next time, so we'll just say....next time :).

I thought for sure that I'd see a picture of that kilt. But...the greatest travesty is that you did not provide a recipe for that cobbler...

We usually have a fire in the oven from buring the marshmellow on the sweet potatoes. Not this year though. Believe it or not, things were quite relaxed. It was nice. We even dined on deep fried turkey and no on got sick. Whew....Looks like all your food was delish!

Wow! You have sure had some interesting thanksgivings! OF COURSE, dessert ALWAYS makes everything better. Yum!

Yep, I am reading Twilight. I actually REALLY liked it and I did for the most part like the ending. It was a happy one :). I had no intention of copying every other teeny boper out there by becoming so interested in Twilight. Honest! I had actually wanted to read the book BEFORE all the teens came to realization of it's exsistence (I don't want to sound mean or anything). I only ended up buying and reading the book recently...purely because I REALLY wanted to :). I might do a review for it on my blog..but perhaps my having read the book may upset some of my blog readers.

Loved that story! It's nice to know that we aren't the only ones with holiday disaster tales. We got lucky this year...but we still have Christmas so I think I should find a piece of wood to knock on...hahaha
It looks you all had a great time and good food though...and that's all that really matters :-)

Wow, Thanksgiving at your house sounds scary!! LOL!! The only mishaps we had at my friend's was her 2 year old knocked over a sparkling cranberry juice filled glass into his 6 year old sister's food and the black lab kept stealing turkey when we were not looking!!

Oh now if you had only gotten photo's of the accident. That would of been priceless.

I wanted to take a photo of my niece screaming right after Mercede had cause a knot to form on her head. But I didn't want her mom to know I a selfish, do anything for a photo op blogger.

I just love your decorating skills. That is a great photo of your colors.

Almost sounds normal around our house. There is always some trauma here so to have normal is a little disarming. Yep, I had no idea that you had sibblings. So glad to see that you had a great holiday.

Now had that pitcher had alcohol in it, it would have already been empty. :)

Yes, I am glad you also had hardwoods........but where's the photo of the homemade kilt?

You HAVE to give those recipes--especially the nutella brownie pie. we LOVE nutella. you made all the food by yourself? you're awesome. so, was your other business you started catering? that food lookes so good. i'm beginning to think there's nothing you CAN'T do. and hopefully you're spilled cranberry punch was better than mine--I couldn't get it right--maybe because I use 7-up instead of sprite and old orchard juice instead of ocean spray.
