friday fotos--state fair time

Taking the boys to the state fair was one of those things I thought I could never, ever do all by myself. Those big crowds that are so easy to get lost in. All those rides with their long, long lines. The diverse assortment of things to have to say "no" to spending money on (no, we can't spend $3.00 to peek at the world's smallest horse....no we can't spend $5.00 to try and win a 4 ft. orange gorilla.....no you cannot get an airbrushed tattoo for $15.....) Did I mention the big, scary crowds? Anyway, I had nearly made up my mind to just not go this year for the first time in my whole life, when I got smacked up side the head by my more courageous self:

"heeeeeey! My mom use to take my brother and I EVERY year.....by herself! (and I only got lost once...)". I find myself taking courage from that thought a lot: If my mom could do it, SO CAN I. So off we went. And you know what? I did it! WE did it! Nobody got lost. Nobody whined or complained about only getting to go on two rides a piece. Everyone was happy just being together. And we had a blast!:

taking a milkshake break!

We stopped to listen to a bluegrass band and Liam was so proud that he climbed to the top of the bleachers all by himself!

This was my treat---warm, cinnamon-glazed pecans. Mmmmmm! Glad I took a picture of them :)!

The friendly corndog people. I just loved all the red going on in this picture!

This looks like a "kiddie" ride---but we all went on it last year and it was so much fun! Lots of spinning involved! (and a short line to boot!)

Aren't fairs fun places to take pictures of random things?!

Grateful that it was a bearable 90 degrees!

This is in the petting zoo tent. James thought the animals were hilarious!--even the big Holstein cow that licked him right on the face!

Look at the look of sheer joy on James's face! This is the first year he could ride the rides without an adult--so no trying to cram my oversized hiney into tiny cars this year. Darn.

Have an absolutely fabulous weekend everyone!

Yay for you! Baby steps...that's all it takes. I feel like your mother telling you how proud I am of you for taking a big step and doing something out of your comfort zone.

Great pictures! It looks like you all had a great time. I'm sure this will go down in Memory History at your house.

Did they have a life-sized statue carved out of butter?

I've never been to a state fair, other than watching State Fair, looks like I'm cheating my children. ;)

Good Job Jennifer. I am sure that your mother is VERY proud of you!!

The boys look truly happy in those pictures.

Glad you all had fun!

Way to go Jennifer P! You did all by self! You have sweet boys and you are doing such a fabulous job making the best out of a poopy situation. What next...Disneyland?

Looks like you had a really great time. Good for you for being brave and going with the kids alone.

When Chris went to Iraq Carter was about 18 months and the other two were about Zane and Ethan's ages and it took me a couple of months to realize that if I was going to keep their lives anywhere near normal I was going to have to buck up and take them places by myself. The first stop was the fair and I was just proud that everyone made it home, and they weren't injured or maimed in any way.

Good for you Jennifer!!! Get out there and live your life. My hubby travels A LOT...it's been this way for 6 years and I hate it. For years I wouldn't do anything with the kids when he was away, but finally 2 years ago, I realized that I needed to. This past Feb I took all 3 kids skiing by myself. I was SOOOO proud of myself. I wanted to tell everyone I saw, "Look at me, I'm here by MYSELF with my kids and I'm doing great...we're having fun!!" It's tiring and I know my situation is not the same as yours by any means...but wanted you to know I'm proud of you!

Have a great weekend!
PS. "$4 for a peek at the world's smallest pony!" Hee hee!

Hi Jennifer - I've been reading your blog for a few weeks now. From what I've read, I really think you are a phenomenal woman. I'm praying for you and your boys.

I'm glad y'all went to the fair and had fun. ~Hope you don't mind me reading your blog every once in a while.

God bless!

You have to go the fair, it isn't an option. I hate the rides so we stick to all the junk food, free music and animals. You know it is a great day when your little one falls asleep in their car seat sticky with cotton candy and smelling like a goat.

I could probably count on one hand the times I have gone to the fair. But it looks fun and the idea that there are loads of great things to take pictures of might be enough to get me there.

I think you are such a great mom and doing so great on your own. I am not nearly as independent as I would like to be. It may take force to get me there!

Great job! I love our fair but it is always hotter than the center of the sun. The only thing that gets me going is our cream puffs:-) Yummo!

You did it! I've been wondering if you were going to tackle the fair or not. I remember how much you love it. (In fact that's one of my memories about you. Seeing you guys at the fair.) Man I love fair food! Ours is next week; can't wait for a Pronto Pup. Mmmmm... And that cow just couldn't resist kissing cute little James. Can's say I blame it.

What fun! Wouldn't life be better if we could have fair food everyday! Well, maybe not... :)

You are the woman! I think I would've chickened out. I'm glad you had a great time and were able to enjoy it.

Loved the pics!

Fun stuff! I haven't been to the fair in ages (6th grade?), but if I went now, it'd be for the food and people watching.

I haven't been to the State Fair since I was a preteen. All I remember was a loooong drive to get there and lots of sweaty smelly people. Being as neither of those things are all that appealing to me, I've never felt the need to return. Looks like your boys are making much better memories of the fair than I did!

By the way, I really like the way you redid your wall. I admire those of you who can artfully layer things like that--it looks really nice.

YEAH for you!!! I could NEVER do that...I don't think?? I'm sure this was a day the boys will never forget! Way to go! Looks like tons of fun. Our fair doesn't generally start until the middle of September. We haven't been the last two years...this just might be the year to return to Great State Fair of OKLAHOMA! Have a great weekend!

Awesome pictures!

I have a confession...

are you ready? Don't tell...

but, I've never been to a state fair!!!

Bad, bad, bad, I know. I need to go. I know I'd love it.

The fair looks like so much fun! I can't wait until my little one is old enough to enjoy such things.

What was this post about? All I can remember was seeing cinnamon-glazed pecans.

Why the heck would you do that to me, I haven't had them in forever, even forgot they existed. And now nothing will matter in life til I have some. You should be ashamed ;)

I love fairs.
I don't love the amount of money you can spend at them!
Good on you for going.
The ride shots are great.

Good for you!!! What a woman! It must have been difficult to consider going alone with 4 children. I know just being faced with that once or twice, I wanted to go hide under the bed. You are doing great!!!

Our fair will be here in a few weeks. Our timing has been off for a bit, so I am not sure if we'll get there this year. What I don't understand is why does a few hours at the fair end up costing more than a day at Disney World?

Cute pictures, cute boys, good girl! Sometimes it is more than lonely being alone, but at least it gives one a chance to savor being with the ones who make life precious NOW. Love, Mom

Great food, great photos, great fun! Looks like "A Fair to Remember." I so could not wait to get to the end of this post so I could make that reference! :)

Oh Jennifer....good job. I really wanted to see photo after photo after photo. I loved it. I also liked seeing what you liked to eat for some strange reason. I've never tried those pecans. I will think of you if I ever do...and in my mind, while I crunch away (or are they soft?) will say, "mmmmmmmm...good pick". Or...."Oh man....Jennifer can have my share."

Good for you! Looks like a great Time at the fair. I have enjoyed County fairs a little more then the State fairs. Only because of your aforementioned crowds. I do not particularly like crowds.

Great pictures by the way. I will remember to take my camera next time.

Totallyscrappy said...

You go, Girl! It isn't always easy to take them anywhere by yourself, let alone a crowded, exciting fair. You should be proud of yourself.

Trooper Thorn said...

Looks like a great day. Are your state fairs like the ones around me? Are there more tattoos and tubetops that you have ever seen in one place at one time?

BTW: It's been a long time, but I have put up a nice long chunk of "Dialing". It is likely the penultimate screenplay posting.

Oh! I love the fair! Good for you for taking them, they are so overpriced and such a money trap--- but fun none the less. Sometimes, you just have to do stuff like that.

The Texas State fair is the biggest in the country, and it starts late next month, I can hardly wait to eat all that fried food goodness!

Scott said...

You did good! I don't have that much courage myself. :)

And I loved the pics!

Have a good weekend!

Shanda said...

I'm relatively new to your blog.
As a fellow single mom, I would love to congratulate you on facing those big, scary crowds. It took me a while to build up the courage to tackle something like that!

I'm so dorky. I left a comment for YOU on the wrong blog (Angie's)

Angie was probably wondering what man I was taking about. whom needed a picture photoshopped (with a wifebeater tee) to be more manly.

The last time I did the Boise Fair I was so nauseated and could not figure out why? I had sweet-boy cooking and did not know it for another 2-3 months. So is the fair still going??? We are coming up this weekend and what a great way to have family time.

See, you are amazing, look at all the fun things you CAN do with the boys. I tell you mother of the year award is coming.....

I am so proud of you! And I might say that I would have been frightened as well...but you did it! You did it! And it made for a great post.
