geniusosity

Some Monday's the Soup du Jour of Genius

is so thick and delicious that I slurp it straight from the bowl,

Let its cream drip down my chin, coat my throat, burn at my belly

It sweaters my insides and sends me back into the snow

Sedated and smiling.

But by Tuesday it it only homeless shelter stew---

mere potatoes and onions

oversalted and thinned with water.

**************

Sorry I couldn't think of anything but a poem to post. BUT I guess that's also a good thing because TODAY (Tuesday) is my first day of school and my first class is.......poetry!

The laptop I ordered hasn't arrived yet (dude! I'm getting a Dell!...), so I ventured out to Target today to get something called "paper" that apparently old people use to write on. Ever heard of it? If you want to try something really 'fun' sometime, try being a 33 year old woman shopping for back-to-school supplies for herself. It's a sea of Hannah Montana out there people! I finally found some kind of notebook with pop-art hedgehogs on it and decided it would have to be "me" enough. I also got good pens, highlighters, and a few folders-- and that's about all I remember ever needing when I was in college 9 years ago. Can I also add that for as excited as I am to be going back, I am also soooooooo nervous! Fortunately, the university I'm attending has a high percentage of students my age---but I still couldn't help looking in my closet wondering if I had anything to wear that didn't scream "I SHOP IN THE MOM DEPARTMENT AT WAL* MART!". I even wondered "should I bring a hackey sack or Frisbee or something?...." Yeah, I'm a big dork like that. I do feel so very blessed though to have gotten all the online and night classes I did. Ones that fit Brad's visitation schedule perfectly. So I still get to be Mom and a student. A "mudent" or maybe a "stom"...... o.k. I better quit while I'm ahead. I think there's only so much nothing anyone can stand to read ;)!

Wish me luck anyway. And please, oh idol gods of luck, let the professor be older than me......

Good Luck! I'm sure the professor will be older than you!!! You are still very young. School is so much better when you're older anyway. I went back in my 30's and got straight A's...something I didn't do the first time around in college:-)

Oh, have so much fun! Hey, maybe the professor will be your age...cute...and single. Or maybe just really old. In any case, enjoy!

I'll bet you are one of the best looking girls on campus no matter where you shop. Do the poetry students have to speak in rhyme all the time (like I just did)?

Thanks for your support for my Olympic blogging. I don't think Letterman could afford me. (ha ha)

Good luck. I am sure you do just great. BTW...I like mudent better than stom

Good luck! How 'bout smomdent?

Yay for you Jennifer P! You're gonna be just fine. Consider these comments just us kissing you and saying goodbye at the "bus stop". And who know? You might get lucky and the professor might drive you home and kiss you goodbye there too!

Good luck! I'll be in your shoes this time next year as a single mom/student. But first, I need to settle on a major. Oh, well. I've got a year to decide.

Yay, I'm so excited for you. We are around most of the time if you run into a bind with the kids and scheduling. When I went back to school after having Ryan I felt I was older than a couple of my professors, and definitely by the time I graduated I knew I was older than some of the new professors.

Good luck with the first day jitters :)

You're going to do fantastic!! My kiddos just started a new school yesterday. My advice to them was "Close your mouth and open your ears" plus the old standby "it takes a good friend to make a good friend". Good for you for pushing through the nervousness and doing something new!! Can I just say how jealous I am. I have grand plans to return to school in the next couple of years. Just not sure I'm brave enough to do it.

I liked today's poem! There's a bite in the air today just like soup season is on its way. Best of luck at school. I always hated those returning moms who aced all the tests and made the curve go up and up and up. :) Maybe we all should wait until we're past 30 to go to college. I'm sure you'll get much more out of it the second time around. And I think a Hannah folder would have been awesome! :)

You are going to do great! Why not the Hannah Montanna supplies?? :)
Hope it is a great day just sit in front and don't look back it always makes the rooms seem so much smaller.
Blessings,
Linda

Do you remember when my mom back to school there? She was the oldest one and she was by far the most popular student in her classes. She worried about being in her 40's when she'd graduate and and her friend said, "you'll be in your 40's anyway, you might as well have something to show for it".

I am thinking, with the way you tackle everything with such a positive, determined attitude, you have nothing to be worried about. But I would be nervous. I will be going back soon and I am nervous. Good luck.

I remember having a cute German teacher at that school you are going to. . . I wonder if he is still there. . .

I was just like that too and so nervous when I went back and it was AWSOME!!!!
There is something about using that part of your brain that has been idle for a time. It is invigorating. You will do great and I agree with so many, the second time around is so much better, WHY, because you are so much better.
Go get'em!!!Deans' List here she comes.........

This is so wonderful! How exciting. But I would steer clear of the hackey sack crowd if I were you. :) Let us know how your first day of school went! You didn't take pictures??

Good luck! You'll do great. I need to go back to school. You are doing a great thing. Hope all goes well.

And your style is totally hip so no worries there.

Exciting! I love school. What classes are you taking?

I'm excited for you Jennifer! I hope everything works out just splendid!:-) And from my days at that school, there were tons of people your age there.....and they were always the smart ones. I never understood how they did it all, went to school, worked, had kids and aced everything. Then as I got older I learned it's called "motivation". Who knew?

That is so exciting! I think it would have to be modent. Although that sounds a little too, um, ratty. Good luck!

Good luck! I'm sure you'll do fine!

I recently went back to school myself. I'm taking online classes and love it.

Have fun!

You don't know me. I'm not cool and have a blog, but I love to read yours (hope you don't mind). Just wanted to say Kudos to you for going back to school. It IS scary, isn't it? It's scary, exhilirating, overwhelming, and mind blowing...and the best thing you could ever do for yourself (and what a gift to give your boys too). I finally decided to go to college after 20 years and thought I was gonna pass out the first day of class. I felt ancient! But, come to find out, the professors love us "older" gals (I was 35 at the time). We bring life experience to the table and they LOVE that. We actually have some depth to us, which, they tell me, is very refreshing. So...yay you!

Sincerely,
Michelle Clarke(one of your fans)

the only fear that you have is if you LOOK older than the students and the teacher (which i am postivie: you won't)
i've got to say, that is one thing that i am (now) happy about: great jeans in the ageing department.
you'll be great, you'll do great, and you'll get published, big time (and then we can all say that we knew you when, adn swarm to your book signings nation-wide!)

I can't believe I missed your first day of school! Boo hiss! I'm so sorry for just now commenting. It's that whole exercising thing...oh yea...and kids wanting to eat! I hope it was GREAT! Can't wait to hear all about it! Great poem!

Good luck at school... a funny thing to wish someone in their
30's I suppose. I'm sure you'll have lots of fun in your classes.

You know speaking of college and school, it's funny the connections you find with friends when you get talking. We actually have the same type of connections with Conner and Lindsey MacClennan who knew Tyler's sister who's down at BYU.

Tyler's brother, Derek, knows a good amount of people; probably because he's pretty social and was one of the basketball team managers.

Like we always say: It IS a small world, even smaller in the church and the very smallest in the church college world!

You NEVER look like you shop in the mommie section at Walmart!!
I am excited for you! Good luck. Let me guess...is your binder RED?

Yeah for going back to school!
Totally know what you mean about school supplies being a sea of Hannah Montana. I don't even know who she is, and yet she's EVERYWHERE!
I'm glad we homeschool and don't have to succumb to the pop trends in Back to School Supplies.
My Petersen-of-5 friend and I decided we liked your white pants outfit, definetly NOT Wally World material. (At least it didn't look like it)
Good luck! I can't wait to read about your new school adventures!
Blessings, Brienne

You rock, Jennifer! I want to hear all about it! How was your class? Was your professor older than you?

I've been going back to school to finish my degree, and I feel SO OLD compared to the students. But, I LOVE learning...I'm a much better student as an adult.

Debbie said...

I thought about you all day today. I sent you an email yesterday asking how it went. Can I just tell you how much I love school supply shopping! The smell of fresh crayons at Target for 22 cents is the best! Keep us posted.

Good luck, and I hope you took the hackey sack with you.

You will love it! (and be great at it!)

I hope your first day went well...it should help that you're a genius. :)

Oh it's the Jennifer I LOVE. I just love listening to you write. What are we going to do when we get together for a movie, and can't come up with a word to say? It's a good thing there will be a movie to do the talking. What am I saying...we're great talkers!

Anyway, once again, you had me just chuckling throughout the whole post. How do you do that? You are one of the few I must say. I loved reading about your

"there's only so much nothing anyone can stand to read ;)!"

I'm really so curious for you to tell us all about it. I so want to go back to college to get my teaching license. I wonder what it will be like for you! I'm so excited! Poetry....it's so you. I wonder what the professor will say.

Don't hold back. Give 'er your best. I wonder where you'll go with this....so exciting.
