i fixed two things

Remember that picture wall I told you I was going to fix? The one that I put up almost two years ago--and immediately hated? The frames were always going crooked for one thing. And for another, it just never quite got in the pattern I wanted-- and I'd already put a billion nail holes in the wall trying to correct it. It got worse after I had to "edit" a few of the pictures. I still want my kids to have pictures of their dad around (and they do), but having to look at our family picture and my wedding picture on a daily basis was a little difficult. Anyway, here's the BEFORE in case you didn't see it on Saturday's post:

All kinds of yucky!!! (except for the people in the pictures--they're cute!)

Now I fixed it!:

Well, "fixed it".... as long as you ignore the holes from the old shelf that need patched and painted, and ignore the fingerprints on all the glass, and ignore the fact that at least one of the frames up there still has nothing in it. It looks better anyway, right? I think so! (and I actually painted that picture of the barn myself with watercolors. There was one like it in the Pottery Barn that I wanted a few years back, but it was too spendy--so I just copied and made my own! --I realize I'm no Van Gogh or anything but I like it enough to stick it on my wall.)

Wanna know what else I fixed?---

This little guy:

He and I were just hangin' out together today, eating some popcorn and watching People's Court, when he picked a kernel out of the bowl, held it up and asked:

"I eat this?"

"Nooooo" I answered, "we don't eat those. Kucky!"

"I do this?" he asked, and in a split second---- stuck... the... thing... up... his... nose...

I tried to get it out with the tweezers, but the more I tried--the more his arms flailed, and the more he rubbed his nose, and the deeper the thing got! SO a trip to the doc in a box and a $20 co-pay later---we have semi-painfully learned the lesson that not only don't we eat the popcorn kernels, but we don't put them in our nose either.

***ALL FIXED!***

Wow, you fixed those pictures good (can you fix my grammar?)! They look awesome, arranging pictures is still the bane of my existence, despite my having looked at hundreds of pictures of good picture arrangements, something's just not clicking.

I'm laughing about kernel-nose, thinking I've been lucky not to have to deal with that yet. Well, wait, my daughter stuck a beebee up her nose and I made her blow it out, like blowing out snot and, lucky me, it worked. Come to think of it, I'm kind of surprised my boys haven't tried it yet...knock on wood.

Aubrey--
It's been 8 years--but my oldest child did the nose thing too! He stuck a nut (like the kind you put on a screw) up his. He told me "just to see if it fit!".

Oooh I like the shelf look much better! Good work!!

And oh my God with little guy's nose. I cannot BELIEVE he put that up there!! What a nightmare.

So now I know what I've always suspected! Jennifer does NOT listen to her mother-in-law! What I say simply doesn't make sense to her! Otherwise, she would have remembered what I did when Brad was little and stuck a bean up his nose. Since I'd had the experience of taking my oldest son to the doctor years before, for just such an outing, which also cost me more than I wanted to spend, I was ready for this one. I simply grabbed the vacuum, stuck it briefly on his nose, and VOILA . . . the bean was out! Next time, Jennifer!

I love your picture wall! It looks really great.

Never had a kid stick something up their nose. Whew. That sounds interesting.

The picture arrangement is perfect. It is balanced and centered and much easier to look at now. Love the painting too! Nothing like making your own art. Nice job:-)

Nice improvement! I can relate to the nose thing... My daughter put beans(hard, uncooked) up her nose. She came to me and said "see" and tilted her head back and I could see a bean in each side of her nose. I knew if I paniced she would inhale, so I freaked inside and remained calm on the outside. Grabbed a tissue and asked her to blow, got 2 beans out, looked and there were 2 more, told her to blow again and got 2 more, looked again and well...this time only got 1 out. I could not believe she had "stored" 5 of them up nostrils! Oh by the way, that little girl grew up and will be giving me my first grandchild
this fall. She called last night and was in disbelief that her ankles had disappeared on her and she had developed cankles... I laughed, and told her to hold tight the best is yet to come!

The pictures look great! I need to do that with some areas around our house as well.
As for the kernal up the nose. Oh. Man. I am praying now that my daughter doesn't decide to try that.
My nephew did it one with a little bb thing from a game while we were babysitting him and it took forever to get it out as I inwardly panicked the entire time because growing up my parents told us the story of a 2nd cousin thrice removed who put a pea up her nose, inhaled it, and died. (I need help with my run on sentences.)

Oh my gosh Jennifer!
First of all, your pictures look GREAT! Very Pottery Barn looking! (Also, I am super impressed that you painted that picture!!

Second, the popcorn kernel up the nose cracked me up!! When my 12 year old was 2 he stuck a raisin up his nose....same deal...we had to go to the doc to get it out with this mini claw like tool. I thought that would teach him....nope, I was wrong...the very next week...same thing ANOTHER raisin up his nose! After that, I wouldn't let him eat raisins for about a year! :)

Thanks for stopping by my blog yesterday! What fun!

OH NO! This is my worst nightmare, but it has never happened. So glad it was okay in the end.

There are just days when I wish I was a doctor... not to be well off or anything, but just to have the knowledge and the tools to fix things around the house. ;)

Your picture wall looks EXCELLENT! Love it!!!

Oh, the kernel up the nose. That's not good. (hey, that sounds like that snot good.) lol!

I must grow up one of these days.

second things second - how do they get things out of little kids noses? did you freak out? i am totally interested in this!

cute shelves and pictures. It looks much cleaner and classier. and, funny james story. glad it didn't cost more and/or was more painful. he's such a cutie! i'll remember not to get tweezers WHEN my kids do the same trick! (:

Mikki said...

Great job on the re-design of the photos. I have a family photo wall that I am always dying to change, but never get around to it.

I've had kids stick various things in their ears that we've had to have the doctor take out. Carter it the only one that has stuck something up his nose. A blue M&M while I was driving. I had him blow it out, it was pretty much melted by the time we got it out. Yuck.

Oh Jennifer! I'm glad your little guy is okay! Hard lesson to learn...my boys never did anything like that..knock on wood...Jake would be the one...there's still time :) I'm lovin' your new arrangement! Great job! And okay...you can write...AND PAINT?? Every day...I'm amazed by you :) Mostly, I'm so impressed that you do everything you do by YOURSELF. I can't even hang a picture. I guess you do whacha gotta do and your doing an awesome job!

Ronnica said...

That looks cute!

My lesson learned: keep popcorn kernels away from young children. Thanks!

Ashley said...

I am still in awe that you painted that picture. Love it and the arrangement! I'll be looking for my custom painting by Jennifer in the mail. Ha! :)

Tamie said...

i like what you did with the wall..the two shelves are great, and i like that you just placed the pictures on the shelves instead of hanging them all on the wall...ah the things kids do...i have never (as of yet) had to pull something out of an ear or a nose...

Jennifer P. said...

Lauren,
They just used a pair of long tweezers. They had a little suction device they could have used, but said they always like to try the tweezers first. James laid really still for them, so it was out in just a few seconds.

Did I freak out? Only inside :)! I've been through the "up the nose" thing once before, so I knew what to expect. I was worried, of course, that somehow he's find a way to inhale it and get it trapped in his lungs or up into his brain and die----but that's the point A to point AAAAAUGH! that mom's always got to :)!

Wow -- your wall looks great! I have been lurking on your blog for a while and wanted to let you know that I love your site and I think it is so cute! Don't kids do the funniest things? Thanks for sharing!!!

Lovely picture wall. I like the double shelves. And just a few weeks ago, Kate stuck the broken off tip of a crayon up her nose. (My first nose sticker.) We blew and blew and blew and it finally came out. Thank goodness! Why do kids stick things in there anyway? Glad the doc was able to get it out.

You really can do anything!

I love how they both turned out :-)

And OMG, he put it up his nose!!! That was too funny! Both of my oldest have stuck things in their ears (luckily both I was able to remove with tweezers....whew!) but I'm sure the nose is to come. That's unexplored teratory! *LOL*

OOOHH! Much better. Can you come and arrange my picture wall too?

Haven't had the delightful experience of an object being stuffed up the nose of any of my guys yet - but I'm sure one of the three of them will do it sometime.

Melissa said...

your shelves look really great! i think they help to straighten so much! and i'm waiting for the day when i'll be rushing my little boy for the same kind of thing. he hasn't totally discovered that talent, yet...but i know the day is coming!!! ;)

Miki said...

LOL!!! Oh NO.....lol. That kernal up the nose story was so funny, and such a sigh for mommy! How did they get it out? I'm going to read comments up above and see if you answered it up there. Did he do okay at the doctors? My little Camille would have screamed and screamed.

What else is funny? Watching people's court....chuckle. That's funny.

The wall was such a simple solution. I bet you did that in one day, and so simply too. I really like it...but I'm TRYING not to be such a copy cat. Poor you and Emily need to have original ideas stay original...but it's so hard to resist the urge to copy!

Good job on the water color too. Such a good solution....and I promise, this isn't a copy, but I've been thinking the same thing lately as I go shopping...."I think I could do that....".

Miki said...

Yep...I found it...tweezers, and he laid very still. Very much worth the visit. I can't believe that one girl who had at least 5 beans per nostril come out! Ohhh, she was a cool mommy under pressure. Unbelievable.

P.S. Love the "Shut up and Let me Go" song now...it grew on me...

Crystal said...

ha!! my little sister did that with the corn kernel too...my dad just closed the other nostril and cupped her mouth and blew and out it popped!

I once stuck a pussy willow up my nose. Ouch! That sucker was hard to get out.
Love your new wall. Very inspiring. I wish I had a wall to do that with. Your house is very cute.
Your watercolor is awesome! Great idea.

Listen, for $15, I'd have fished the kernal out for you. But I'm like that. I'm a giver...

Why do kids put things up their nose? I don't get it. My niece did the same thing....my mom was able to get it out. I'm just waiting for my turn when my son does it!!! Ugggh.....

I love the new picture wall. You did a great job! You did a fantastic job on the barn too! And don't you feel like after you can fix all this stuff yourself that there isn't anything you can't do? I'm a single mom and I like to feel that way.....

WOW - the wall looks Gorgeous!

And I think a certain Icelandic sportsnuticas is gorgeous, too.

I'm weird like that.
Although, we haven't watched him in over a year. It brought back good memories, nonetheless. *sigh*

Oh - and my music's always on. I'm so sad that the likes of The Nester and Chatting at the Sky have turned theirs off. I discovered a lot of good stuff through their playlist, back in the day.

Thanks for coming by today!

Little boys will try so many things! When Carson was in first grade, he stuck an eraser in his ear at school, and we had to take him to the Dr. to get it out. Joe teased him about it, and Carson took it to heart. I overheard him tell one of his buddies that he thought that eraser had erased some of his memory. I guess it didn't, though, because he seemed to learn his lesson and hasn't tried that since.

Your picture wall looks lovely, and I couldn't help but notice the multi-colored circles on the wall in the next room. That looks like something worth telling us about.

Here is my jem for ya...... My sweet Drama Queen in Kindergarten was dared to stick some of the playground gravel in her ear. She not only stuck one in but several. Later in the day she told me that her ear hurt and then began to tell me what she had done. WE went to the Pediatrician, after hours and spent a good 75 minutes there trying to loosen the rocks in her ear. Finally they came out with a water-pick like devise and we came home with her bottle of ear rocks. Next day she got to tell and show the kids what you do not do with rocks. I think that part was the worst for her, mine was the co-pay for the after hour visit. Kids gotta love the fun of what they do......

Ouch... corn kernel up the nose. Very 'kucky'.

ByHISgoodGrace said...

The shelves look so sharp, nice job! Love your style.

I can't believe he put the kernel up there! My nephew did it with a piece of corn at Thanksgiving. We held one nostril and told him to blow and thankfully, it flew out. No one really wanted to eat corn after that.

The wall rehab looks great...and your watercolor, near as I can tell is fabulous! But let's get to the popcorn thing...that was hilarious. I know it wasn't to you, but seriously...the image of you watching the People's court and picking popcorn out of your son's nose is funnier than any TV show. I am glad all is fixed and that you it made a truly great blog post....soo soo funny...
