I was cleaning out papers from my Ethan's backpack, when I ran across a worksheet with "What Makes a Hero?" on the top. On it, he had to go through and circle whether or not he agreed or disagreed with a list of statements describing a potential hero. He wrote:
A hero is brave and strong---agree.
A hero is caring and thoughtful---agree.
A hero is selfish---disagree.
A hero is never frightened---agree.
A hero makes mistakes--disagree circled, then erased and agree circled instead.
A hero is never silly---again, first agree circled, then changed, disagree.
A hero is dishonest---disagree.
A hero puts others before himself or herself---agree.
A hero stands up for himself or herself---agree.
A hero never gets angry---agree.
As I finished reading, I thought "that's great how my little guy has such a firm grasp on heroic traits", and I almost threw the worksheet away. But then I turned it over.....
The other side was called "My Hero". I'm putting his answers exactly as they're written in all their 8-year-old splendor:
If you could pick one person who you would consider to be your hero, who would it be?---my mom.
What qualities does this person possess that makes him or her special?---nice to othr peple.
In what way would you like to be similar to this person?---I want to be as nice as her.
How would you have to change?---triy hardr.
I bet you can guess that I am never, ever, ever going to throw this away! I may even have it framed and/or archived. What more could a mom ask for than to have her children admire her? My heart is smiling just reading over his sweet answers again.
Now if only I could use my super power of "nice" to turn the earth back on its axis or leap tall buildings in a single bound or maybe turn cheesecake into a low calorie, nutritious snack.....
and thank you Ethan. I'll try and stay worthy of being your hero forever and ever!

That is so sweet! It's got to be that kind of stuff that makes some of those not so nice days worth it.
So sweet! Mom's need to hear those things once in a while don't we? Way to go Super Nice Hero lady.
That is a big AAAAhhhhh moment! Definitely a keeper. What a sweet boy you're raising.
I had no idea you came up with the placemat/pillow idea! If so, you deserve full props for that one! I bought these napkins 2 years ago and then decided they would make beautiful pillows! And I agree, hot glue in the wash sounds like it would be detrimental to my washing machine!
I love those moments. Kaitlyn did a Reflections entry that was My Favorite Place is . . . in my mother's arms. I will cherish that one forever too. Good job Ethan.
that is seriously so very sweet. not many mom's are their boys hero's...but you're not ordinary mom, are you? that will be a treasure in your heart forever!
what a sweetie! i can just see you almost throwing it away, but instead being blessed by this most precious surprise. it would be something that i would keep forever, too - and then bring it out when he's 15 and saying he hates you! haha.
Wow, what a treasure!! Those papers are especially wonderful to read 10 years from now!! You go girl. I admire you big time!
That is so cute. You have to know you are doing something right when you child thinks so highly of you. And later when he is a difficult teenager you can pull it out and show him! I have a valentines card from my daughter that says "you are the best mom ever" and I kept that one.
Ohhhh! That is THE sweetest! I think there's only one thing to say...JOB WELL DONE! (Or at least started :) I'd put it in the safe room and bring it out in about 5 years to remind him :) So...do you have your superhero costume all picked out yet...huh huh!? I can't wait to see the pics!!
FRAME IT BIG!!!! HUGE and Highlight the mom part and hang it right over your fireplace as the center point. You have enough decorator friends to pull it off...no - you are that decorator friend!! hee hee
Jennifer, that paper from Ethan should come as no surprise to you. Ethan is the prince of kind words and thoughts. Give him a hug for me, and tell him he is one of MY heros! (is that the way you spell that? It surely doesn't look right!) Love, Grandma
Adorable. Funny--check my blog tomorrow -- goes right along w/ this. (Which superhero are you? I'll need to get you one. :-) Isn't it fun to type w/ one hand w/ a 2 year old on your lap? Take care.
I'd call that a tender mercy. Aren't you so glad you didn't just chuck that one in the trash. So sweet!
That is so sweet. Kids they just know how to melt a heart.
Each year I get a big tupperware container for all their school, church and creative stuff. I put everything in it and I have ever since Preschool. The man thinks that I am insane and maybe I am but I love going back and looking at how they have changed and the darling things that they have made over the years.
I think I am going to go sing, "Memories, like the corners of my mind" and be sad......time is going too fast for me and my kids.
If you can do that cheesecake trick, I will marry you right now. Or, offer something really good if marriage to me isn't what you are looking for...
Wow, what a great post. Thanks for sharing. Treasure that always, for sure.
That is just one of God's little reassurances that everything is going to be ok.
Don't ever ever get rid of that paper. Ever.
How sweet is that? Certainly one to keep for future viewing. I don't think I have said it before but I really love how you have your music match your post, just plain fun.:)
Blessings,
Linda
That is just precious!!! (love the music too!)
:)
Oh Lord, that brought a tear to my eye that was so sweet! I had to think about some of those questions for a minute just the way they were worded - he did a great job!
BTW, the video is up! In your honor.
ok, maybe i'm just being emotional, but this made me cry! what a sweet sweet boy. his mom really IS a hero ;)
Boys LOVE their mommas.
That is precious, and the artwork you included is perfect! We all knew you were Super Mom!
I promise .... I'm not PMSing...and my eyes still welled up with tears a little. That really WAS just so neat. Thanks for sharing such a tender moment.
Awwww... this is so sweet! I am 24 now and my mom still has one of the drawings I made for her for Mother's Day framed on our kitchen wall. It was on a plain sheet of notebook paper and has hearts drawn all over it and reads "You are the best mom in the whole world and the best mom I have ever had." Sweet, right? Considering she is my only mother. Ha! Well, she thought it showed my humor I guess (when I was 7) so on the wall it went and has stayed. Haha! So frame it! Your kids will appreciate it, too!
As a mother of three boys who are also lovers of all things heroic, it is such a breath of fresh air to find out they put us in that catagory! Keep up the good work. I suppose there is room enough in this world for another Super Mom! ;)

Uhm...and if you could obliterate the mosquito population that would be helpful. Maybe not eco-responsible, but I don't think anyone would mind too much.
That is awesome ~ I think it is time that you made yourself a cake!
Love that Jennifer!
What a great feeling to know you are your childs hero!
Oh that is so sweet!
You know, as much as I dread the idea of my little ones heading off to elementary school (in a year) I do look forward to (hopefully!) finding little treasures like that in their backpacks.

Wow! What a great story. That's one of those "makes it all worthwhile" kind of moments you get now and then as a mom. Sounds like it's time to get fitted for a cape and some tights! -Julia :-)
That is so sweet. I'm so glad that you turned the paper over!! You'll have that one forever.
So cute! I love that, keep it for always in a special place. I would even hang something like that on my christmas tree!!
That is so sweet. It's true though. I would frame it and put it somewhere you would see it every day to remind yourself!
I think your little guy has you pegged to a T. What a lovely find!
Linda
That was the COOLEST thing I ever read!! You are a great Mom.. and a fun person to blog visit!! Good luck in school!!
That's so adorable and sweet! I love it! Definitely hold onto that one for a looong time.
sob. That is so sweet. I am pretty sure my kids don't even like me! :)
Oh my goodness, that is just so beautiful. I had a hunch when I started reading it, that he would say, "my mom" but it was still awesome to read through it and see that yes, it was you. How amazing for you. It brought tears to my eyes.
