i spy.....stuff i found in my jacket pockets

So--this weekend I ATTEMPTED to purge my mud room. It was supposed to be a place for shoes, coats, backpacks, and car keys.....and has ended up with everything else from other "purged" rooms. Except.... I got a little distracted. Because the first thing I went to clean out in there was the coat closet. And the first thing I pulled out from the darkest corner of the closet was this:

THIS was "MY" jacket. **My signature look**. From 1991-1994, I wore this EVERYWHERE! Across 6 countries. Over jeans, shorts, dresses, pajamas (well, not really the pajamas, but...) My most favorite outfit was this jacket with a white t-shirt, a kilt, fishnets, and my Doc Marten boots---which all went well with my 10 earrings and blue-streaked hair. Yeah!--I bet you'd all like a picture of me in THAT, huh :) ?! (Remember Tina?--I had that EXACT outfit on the night we got in the wreck!).

Anyway, I immediately tried it on and it felt.....like home! It also felt......like it weighed about 25 pounds! And why would that be?!-- Well, JUST LOOK at all the stuff that was crammed into every pocket of this jacket!!!:

I felt like I was wearing a walking scrapbook!!! Most of this stuff is from Germany, but there were other little surprises too. You can always make the picture large and play this game of I Spy with me!...

I SPY:

* a drillteam rehearsal schedule

* a note from my bff Teresa--the 90's girl's version of a text!

*a ticket to go see Pink Floyd's "The Wall"

*an Orbit gum wrapper (long before Orbit made its way to America!)

*a coaster (bierdecke) marked with the handwritten message "when I was stuck in the bathroom" (a story for another time!...some of you have heard it!).

*a picture of Depeche Mode--(I guess I needed it in case I wanted to look at them or something!)

*the program from a German play which a bunch of us skipped out on during intermission, and caused the event that will forever be known as "we-broke-the-elevator-by-jumping-in-it-gate" (Tina--again? Remember this?...the rest of you....just use your imaginations!)

*a receipt from when gas was $1.07 a gallon and I could fill my whole Honda up for less than $20! (and also signed with my maiden name!)

Well, since turning the jacket into a blog story had, by now, kind of taken up all my mudroom cleaning time, the only sensible thing to do was throw it on over my church clothes and let Liam and I rock out for a photo shoot done by Zane, of course!:

Oh yeah!.....I still got it :)! *** (and no--I didn't wear it to church. Because those kinds of things are acceptable when you're 17 and have blue hair, but I think they make you wear a scarlet letter when you do it at 33!)

~Do you (or did you) have a signature piece of clothing?~

Um... yes. Yes I would. . . .

Cute stoy. I have my old leather coat I got in 1991. I still wear it sometimes too, but it's in pretty sad shape anymore. I do like how heavy it is when I wear it, though. A very reassuring sense of "heft" to it.

HELLO EVERYONE! *Does the sound in my music remind anyone else of "Logan's Run?" Am I the only one who loves that movie?! I can hear people saying "sanctuary!" right now :)!*

Funny! Maybe we are in a time warp here, but I still see people with leather jackets, metal, and blue or maroon hair/highlights here in Germany. You would so fit in here again. Lufthansa anyone? :D

Tschüss!

Haha, what a cool jacket! Looks like you never emptied the pockets of it though :P...but i never empty my jacket pockets either so....I wonder whats in them now!

Very rockin' photos by the way! Love the outfit :)

Love your jacket. :) How fun to find all those momentos.
You gotta share a picture of you with blue hair. :)

Mine was a pair of huge black combat boots! I wore them with everything... my mom hated that. I give her lots of credit for not making a huge deal out of the fact that I wore them to church!

Okay, that cracks me up because I have a coat exactly like it, but with more zippers, and I, too, did the blue hair thing, and purple, and red-orange, but blue was always my go-back-to color of choice. Gotta love Manic Panic! AND, I had a similar experience 5 or 6 years ago of emptying pockets, and while I had nothing from Germany, I had lots of concert tickets, an old tub of Carmex, that I distinctly remember receiving a perfectly round bruise from when it was in my front left pocket of my jeans in a NIN mosh pit, etc. Oh, you are flooding me with memories today as I sit here in my 15 year old PWEI t-shirt. Really, I'm not kidding. Oh! and Kilts! Kilts with giant safety pins, kilts with antique broches, kilts with leather buckles... and always beneath some funky stripey stockings or fishnets, and of course the DM boots! My favorite were a pair of red plaid DMs... Like I said... I'm flooding here. Oh, and my NAD t-shirt collection. Good ol' Ned's. Good times. Good times. I should go look up Stinkweeds now.

jennifer that was seriously one of the best posts! and i didn't really have a signature "thing" to wear. i've been sitting here for about a minute trying to think if there was ever one thing, can't think of it...yet (it might just come to me later on today....)
what a fabulous find---tell zane he did a great job at taking pictures! :)

Okay... I just read your own comment. I'm not catching on to the Logan's run connection to the Cure, however. Do tell!

I always find things in the pockets of my winter coats. I forget about them...and then they go in the closet for a year. Maybe I should start dry cleaning them!

Signature clothes? Yep. Right now. I call it frumpy fabulous.

I think I remember you wearing it even with your pajamas. Don't be bashful about it.
Yeah, the car crash, can't forget it. A rave, my blood crusted velvet pants, fake Jesus standing over me in the median, and a bald spot on the top of my head. I still have a small scar over my eye from the glass breaking. I think scars are sexy, so I don't mind having that little reminder.

I husband has a jacket like that he wears when he rides his Harley! Love it. You need to bring it back into your wardrobe!!

That brings back memories!! I had a blue and white tennis sweater and a Harvard sweatshirt that I loved. I guess that shows you how adventurous I was!

I will not part with my brown, leather jacket. And yes, it weighs 20 pounds! They were so stinkin' heavy. I also won't part with my original pair of Birkenstocks. (If you watch closely, you may still see my run to the mailbox in a much newer pair.)

I dare you to wear it to church (even if you take it off while you're there)--you do still got it. By the way, um, awesome church dress! Where do you buy such cool clothes? I tell you, I'm already a frumpy mom wearing stuff I bought 7 years ago!

I hope you stuffed all of that stuff back in the pockets......think how fun it'll be to find in another 10 years. Talk about a veritable time capsule!

I didn't realize we were the exact same age.....and probably spent the same time travelling in Europe!

I LOVE your church dress.......where did you get it?

I wore ALOT of baggy mens 501's belted high at the waist during that time....:)

I don't think I have a signature piece of clothing..... or at least not any I'll admit to. ha! I love the photo shoot, though. How fun!

I had a levi jacket that I loved and wore clear out. It went everywhere with me....I am sure that it could tell lots of fun stories on me. I had purple, pink hair in highschool. The result of a older friend going through beauty school and not done in error either.

Sweet jacket! I had a similar jacket back in the day that was one of those cheap leather jackets from Wal-mart or something where the lining was a world map. Oh I was awesome--no denying it!

That was a fun post! I was grunge/prep - imagine it - I dare you... permed BIG hair & penny loafers with flannel... I was confused ;-p

I got my dress on close out at Kohl's last Fall for $10! It's short sleeved, so I threw the sweater over it and the leather tie belt to match my riding boots. Don't you love "outfits" :)?! Oh---and the pearls are actually a headband I inherited from my Mom that work better around my neck than on my head!

That jacket is awesome!!! I love that you found all those treasures, how cool is that!?

Okay, so my signature item was a denim jacket...still wear one occasionally. I had a leather one that I LOVED...but it was stolen. VERY sad. And the ones I've found recently are too light-weight.

Fun trip down memory lane!

Mine was more like a signature accessory. I had a GIANT Espirit black bag that I used as a purse. It had everything including the kitchen sink inside. Loved that thing. I love finding old treasures in pockets and bags. Fun times and sometimes even money!! (That's the best.) And I am loving me some DP today. I can't help but groove a little bit in my seat.

You should wear that coat everywhere, it is fantastic. I was into sweatshirts with the collars cut off.

I wanted one of those jackets SO bad! My girlfriend had one and was so cool.

Oh Jennifer.. we could SO have been friends! I had almost the same jacket.. and the doc marten's (shoes.. and I still have/wear them!) I was a little older though..
Sad thing is.. last time I found a treasure trove in an old coat is was full of matchbox cars and plastic army men.. and a few polly pockets in there too- this was about 2 years ago (and my kids are now 15 and 11)

Oh! Okay, it was Rush. I thought your top song today was In Between Days... I must have inadvertantly clicked it. Dang. I'll have to go back and listen to the Rush track later and see what you mean. Anyhow, Thanks for coming over and following my blog. We are two of a kind, the 90's pre-emo leather jacket girls! LOL

Seeing your jacket reminds me of the leather (or something like it) jacket my husband wore all the time when we met our freshman year of college. When I was cleaning out our coat closet a couple of years ago, I was tempted to get rid of it. But then Joe tried it on, and when he hugged me it kind of squeaked like it used to years ago and we both started laughing. We decided it had too many memories in it to get rid of!

Trish said...

You make me smile!

I am a major purger so I have NOTHING from my early years, except the extremely sentimental items.

I do believe that jacket qualifies as extremely sentimental though, especially with all it's pocket goodies!

BTW, I love the barn star hanging on your house! Is it orange?
too cute!

The only signature thing I wore was peach lotion! I wore it for like five years without changing it or cheating on it because I wanted people to smell it and think of me!

And can I say. . .You've still GOT IT! I wonder if I have any jackets around with my past hiding in it? Probably not. I clean out my closet too often. My theory is, if I manage to keep only the things I use Rob won't look at my closet and say, "You don't need new clothes--look at all that clothing!" It always goes over better if I "need" it!

ok way to funny... I have a jacket alot like yours...only mine has fringe...oh ya! I went for the "upgrade"

Sadly I didn't have as hip a jacket as you...instead I had a khaki reversible IZOD jacket...that I still own...and sometimes still wear...because it is a classic!

BTW...you look fab in that jacket...as per usual ;)
