what defines us: my 80's self

There was a writer's workshop prompt Mama Kat gave a few months back that I wanted to do-- but didn't for some reason-- so I decided to give it a whirl now. The challenge was: With your eyes closed, open up a dictionary and point to a word. Tell us what that word means to you.

Well, believe it or not I DO keep a dictionary by my computer. I dug it out and put it there last December when Blogger's spell check was down for weeks and weeks (those were some great, crazy weeks to see everyone's poor spelling--mine included :) !).

Anyhow, the first word I pointed to was foreshorten. That word had absolutely no meaning to me whatsoever. Next I got strontium ( a yellowish, reactive, metallic element). That one, too, not having a lot of meaning for me. Then I got Lastex, depredate, and talc. No, no and no. Hmmmmm......I was thinking that the dictionary thing was not going to work after all! And then it dawned on me.....this post didn't want to be about the word, but about the dictionary itself. Because for the many "pointless" words that were in my dictionary.....I couldn't help but think of all the words that WEREN'T in it.

You see, my dictionary is from *1987.*

It went through junior high and high school and even college with me. It skips from "internee" to "internest" with nary a mention of INTERNET. There are no i- anythings or e- anythings. No GPS. No cell phone. No Google. "Blockade" is right before "Blond" (or the feminine "blonde") without even a hint of the word "blog". They. didn't. even. exist.....and now I can't imagine any of those things NOT existing.

Yet 1987 doesn't seem like that long ago to me! I wore Keds with pushed down socks, and a fringed denim jacket, and Exclamation! perfume. I listened to Depeche Mode's 'Music for the Masses' tape on my "boom box" (do you think "boom box" is still in today's dictionary?....what about "Walkman"?...). I had a crush on the actor Chad Allen. I used a curling iron shaped like a triangle (it was suppose to make triangle curls, but, mmmm....not so much.). I had teal mascara.....and I actually wore it! My mom drove me to piano lessons every Wednesday and did cross word puzzles while she waited. My best friends were Tara and Summer and Michelle. I had my first kiss and hated it. I had a Swatch. I carried a Benetton bag to school. *** That world is still so real to me..... and yet it was a world soooo different than the one I'm in--that we're ALL in-- now. I think I'm beginning to understand what my mom meant when she told me: it doesn't matter how smart you are, there is no substitute for life experience. ~She was right.~

Does that mean I'm getting old......and wise?

Oh, 80's self.....if only you'd known....you would have just enjoyed doing cheerleading routines to "You Spin me Round Like a Record"-- and not worried so much about growing up!

*sigh*

SO----

Wanna know what I looked like in the 80's?!?! .....

My friends and I use to do modeling work for Maurices. This was taken backstage at one of the fashion shows. I can't believe all our hair fit in this picture! (I'm the one in the middle.....I was 14!):

Notice my friend Michelle has on one black shoe and one white shoe? Classic!

And now a dance picture with my friend Danny Nava. I think I was 13 here ---

This must have been the year I wore nothing but black and white! Notice the scrunchy around my ankle? Was I making a fashion statement?! Also---all my fingernails are black and white! And look at Danny sporting his 80's mini-mullet, red skater high tops, tucked-in surf shirt, and swatch---complete with the plastic "swatch guard" thingie!

This last picture isn't of me. It's of my friend Becky. She was this sweet, quiet, non-makeup wearing girl who I thought needed a little more "pizazz". So I offered to give her a makeover. This is how she turned out.....(nothing could be more 80's than this)......

Wouldn't you have wanted one of my makeovers too?!?! Oh, I'm laughing so hard looking at this I can hardly type anymore!

***You are all so totally rad!!! :)***

(private note here, the rest of you can move to comments!): X'ioq, Kh'ao Ao Kh'ie B'iook R'iuq A H'iatie H'iae Aq IA J'ioqp K'abie! Ch'iak E'ioieo Kh'iak O'iau Iam'ioiuk Bu J'arie.... :) ?!

That is SOME hair!! I love it! I looked through my photo albums for something 80's to post but I think my mom must have most of the pictures from that era. I almost posted my best friend in 8th grade wearing her MC Hammer pants. Oh good times!

Girl. The hair and the polka dots. That is just pure 80s goodness.

We used to do makeovers too! Keds? Check. Swatch? (*knockoff*) Check. But my bag was an Esprit.

Wow. That's about all you can say. Wow.

I love it, but that makeover was SCARY!!

I did the piano lessons for 8 awful years. My mom made me go in the 80's!! lol And I actually have the piano music to You Spin Me Right Round baby!! Really I still do, but never could play it. Wonder how it sounds on the piano.

All those horrid curling irons that came out with like the triangle, never worked!

No idea who Chad Allen is, but I am sure he is scary!! lol

Off to go Google him!

White Keds were the bomb!!!

That picture of Becky is hilarious!!! I bet you thought, Dang, I did a good job she looks good! HAHAHA
Great post!!

It was all about Tretorns at my high school instead of Keds..... I had like four pairs (bought with my own, hard-earned babysitting money, as Mom thought there was no need to have more than one pair of sneakers. She just didn't get it! LOL)

Oh, and now I have You Spin Me Right Round stuck in my head, just from reading the words..... I'm gonna have to go back over to my post and get Duran Duran back in there instead!!

As for the black and white, I totally wanted to wear one black and one white shoe with my senior year prom dress (couldn't find two that matched in the different colors though - this was pre-Payless LOL), so I went for white stockings and black heels. It was quite a look, you weren't the only one doing the B&W thing! Hee!

Happy 80s day!! Cheers!

Oh.. I was in Target the other day and saw a tester for Exclamation! I couldn't help myself. I sprayed it all over me and delighted in the smell of my past for a few hours.
I love these looking back posts. I love the eighties. Oh- and I think my sister had that black with white polka dots dress. Ahh the memories.

I think I had the same hair you have in the Maurices shot. And I love how in the pic with the boy you are leaning AWAY from him. Sweet.

OH woooowwwww...LOL this brings back SO many memories that I haven't thought about in years. Some I'd rather forget, like the fact that my husband who really liked Exclamation perfume still tries to talk me into buying AND wearing it...He's a goof ball ;P

GREAT hair here! Seriously! I don't think my hair was EVER that big but my BANGS were definitely just as cool ;)

I think Becky's pic wins hands down and hair up! Oh my Lord, I was laughing so hard! Can you give me some more pizazz? PLEASE?

I had hair like you had in the first picture and I like to refer to it as my "lampshade" hair. Lovely!

I swear to goodness you andmy best friend are identical twins... that first picture I had to do a quadruple take.

Ahhh the polka dots of the 80's......

I need go to digging out some pictures.

My ten year old walked in and saw the pictures and said "Why is her hair all big and puffy?" That's the '80's for ya!

I have to laugh because we are the same age, so I totally relate because I wore the same things, had the same huge 80's hair, the same pegged pants, and wore purple eye shadow that I thought was so cool. We watched a home video at my parents house in July and my bangs were ratted straight up. My kids were so embarrassed and had to rewind it about five times.

And the boom box thing, we used to bring one to school sometime in the mid-80's to listen to Huey Lewis and the News.

Mah hair mah hair! I'm a 70's child ~ we had the ultra-cool "triangle" poofy PERM goin' on back in the olden days ~ in which one's head was MEANT to look like a pointy shape.

The eighties hair is an exaggerated imitation of 70's poofiness.

AUGGGGGH!
wow---i think that was toooo much of a flashback for me...i think that i'll steer clear of my picture books from my childhood for a few days...i don't need any of those memories to be any more clear than they already are. :)

I LOVE it! Thanks for the smile! I was an 80's girl once too :)

It is so funny to see those photos because I REMEMBER them vividly. It was a great time. We were so cool.

I had the long ratted up waterfall bangs and always wore a black hat (it used to be part of my sisters drill team costume). I had an attitude that I was the coolest thing because I was New Wave and listened to Depeche Mode while all the little ones around me were stuck on Def Leppard. I had a crush on your dear Danny Nova. Your friend Michelle, she tried to beat me up in high school. She still had the same hair at the time (1993).

Will you give me a makeover?!

What kind of torture device did you use on that friend of yours in her makeover? Electrocution?
And I am so curious about what the private note to self was?
Great post!

I love, love, love the make-over! You are a genius! What you could do with a comb and some Aqua Net!

I joined you in this 80s celebration. My pic isn't quite up to par with yours but I posted anyway.

Have a great day!

Oh, Maurices...how I loved that store. Got all my Esprit and Guess sweatshirts there. (But not the Guess jeans--my Mama wouldn't pay the big bucks for 'em.)

I had every version of all 3 of those dresses. And I used half a can of Aqua Net each week to get my big 80's hair. BUT...I think you win...yours was bigger.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane...good memories...good times...

You were such a Debby Gibson girl!
I tried dressing like Cyndi Lauper for Halloween a couple of years ago (I have red hair) and teenage girls at my door asked if I was MADONNA! Ugh! Kids these days! LOL

Wowza.....big hair!! But, I am one of those weird people who actually like to have big hair! :) Maybe it is coming back in???!

I like the black dress you were wearing in the picture of you and your model friends!

Okay Curl Girl!! I dub you that from your 80's pictures and the story about the triangular curling iron. I know, I know; it doesn't fit now, but most nicknames we outgrow anyway. Love the walk down memory lane. I never wanna see those parachute pants and jeans sliced in rows again (except in pictures). Great job!! GB!

And I loved hearing YAZ!! that was too cool!!

Wow those are great. That makeover was incredible! I have the PERFECT 80's hair but I flat iron it everyday. I'm waiting for poofy, frizzy hair to make a comeback!

Melissa Lester said...

I am amazed to look back on all the hair too! I used to get up so early to hot roll my hair every day before school. I'm really glad that's not the trend now. Low maintenance is good!

I don't think I've ever seen hair that big. And I thought we did hair big here in the south. I never had big hair. Nor did I use aquanet. I however did have a swatch. And a guard.

Claremont First Ward said...

Wow. You know how to rock that aqua net on your friends.

I had a crush on Chad Allen too. A BIG one. I actually met him in real life. He was a real JERK (seriously). He didn't ask me out or anything. j/k.

Oh, the memories of the 80's......:)

Oh dear. Oh oh dear. I mean you EMBRACED the 80's. I love the scrunchie on the ankle. Fashion forward.

I'm pretty sure 1987 was the year I had my first kiss! (january 28th) I remember that!
by the way...love the leather jacket! It's totally boss!

Magson said...

Wow. Memories.... the big hair. . . the clothes..... Suddenly I have this urge to go dig out my old yearbooks and buy a scanner.

BTW, other than the hair, you DID do a good job on the makeover ;-)

My 1st kiss wasn't until 1992 though, and I loved it, even if I did it badly. Fortunately I had a forgiving girlfriend who then taught me how kissing should be over the next several months.

Jenni said...

I forgot about so many of those things! Rob was just telling me that I am so hard on my watches he is going to get me a swatch watch with the guard thingie! And I am laughing at that make-over too. My eight year old just walked up and said, "What happened to that girl? She looks freaky!"

So there you go. . .

Rich said...

And we thought we looked sooo good back then... heaven help us.. oh wait it did - we look Sooo much better now - hopefully we don't say the same thing about today in 2030 :)

Love your pics! I've stalked for a little while so I'm coming out of hiding. I think you are funny and super! Had to tell you that. Growing up in the eighties/early nineties, I can totally appreciate all the things you mentioned. Exclamation perfume - rotfl. Remember it well, in all its cheapy goodness. And wasn't the bottle even black and white?

Oh My.. the makeover.. whew!! Do you ever worry about the damage we all did to the Ozone in the 80's? Aqua Net.. my best friend. I grew up close to SLC, and we calle our hair (you know, the stand up bangs with WINGS) the Wasatch Front! Sad thing is.. when I go home, I still see people with it!
Oh.. and I had several pairs of Keds, and a Swatch watch with a guard.. and RED Varnet Sunglasses!! Scary! I will have to see if I can find a picture..

Oh the hair...oh the hair...I can barely type right now because I am laughing so hard.....Oh my word....and that makeover...
