return to my europe journal: the final chapter

In case you're not aware of this form of flashback torture I put my readers through :)...

You can learn about me:

*dancing all night in a Paris disco

*turning 18 in a foreign country

*finding and losing love with Lars the German

Now let's read about an 18 year old Idaho girl's first impression of Paris.....(c'mon--you KNOW you want to!)

------------------------------------

6/17/93 ---(this is just how it appeared in my journal:)

Miriam and I caught our Ikarus Reisen tour bus in Karlsruhe at 6:30 am and were on our way. Took about 7 hours to get here, but it was worth it as we pulled into the beautiful (though heavily trafficked!) Paris streets.

With smiles on our faces, we entered the Hotel Chateau Rouge in the Rue de Jean market place. Our smiles quickly faded, however, when we climbed 98 spiraling stairs to the dumpiest room I've ever seen! The bed (only one!) was lumpy, we had one sink and a bidet---and the only toilet and shower were to be shared with the entire hotel floor--women AND men. Guess I'll be washing my hair in a bidet for the next 2 weeks! If that wasn't enough, our view of Paris is of the backside of a rundown apartment building. AAAAUGH! Miriam and I almost cried! What Harlem is to New York, Rue de Jean is to Paris!

(yeah....I know I need a scanner! But here's a picture I took of a picture of myself outside our hotel!--I'm the one with that crazy long hair! )

We got unpacked and decided to head out and see what we could see. I began to notice right away guys looking at us---and not just "looking", but LOOKING! Soon the looks turned into lunging men saying "ooh-la-la" (yes! they really say that!) and making kissing sounds. I knew Paris was the 'city of love', but it seemed more to me like the 'city of perverts'.

Other things I notices about Paris:

~ garbage EVERYWHERE! ~little dogs EVERYWHERE! ~Hoards of clothing shops all selling the same things. ~Women running around in very little. One lady was even stripped down to her bra and underwear.... dancing in a fountain.... with a jar of olives. That was interesting! ~Public toilets you have to pay to use. Between those and the one toilet for a whole floor at our hotel, I don't think I'm going to ever get to pee in Paris!

We bought some postcards and headed to Le Sacre Couer. We climbed the BILLION stairs to the top and arrived huffing and puffing--but it was worth it when we turned around and looked out over the HUGE sprawling city of Paris. I've never seen anything so BIG in my life! It was breathtaking! On our way down, we stopped and listened to a man play the guitar and sing. And I just sat there looking out at all the lights and listening to the French music, and it was really, really peaceful. I never thought a girl like me would ever make it to Paris---especially not on her own!
(this photo only shows the top most flight of stairs. If you look to the left-hand you can see the very top of another building and get an idea of how high up this church was!) ~~~~~~~~~~

And that's all there is. Au Revoir :)!

p.s. yes--I really washed my hair in a bidet for 2 weeks--except for the two times I used that tiny multi-user bathroom's shower....at 3 am! It was an adventure!

Ha! Sounds like my sisters recent trip to Europe! Very entertaining, especially about the toilets.
That was the BEST part.
And she was pretty put out about how "luxurious" the hotels and hostels were too. ;)

Reminds me of my trip to Paris. Our hotel was similar, although we did have our own bathroom. I was just as fascinated with Sacre Couer, the view, the music... I really have to go back one day. Thanks for stopping by my blog!
Liebe Grüße
Anja

Oh my, Paris sounds so....glamorous??? :)

Seriously, I'm so not kidding.. you totally look like an 90's Maybelline model. I just know right after that picture was taken you tipped your glasses down, peeked over them and whispered "Maybe it's Maybelline."

wow! what an experience! i'm not sure that i could say that i would want the same (what with sharing a bathroom in a hotel and washing my hair in a badet....) but it is awesome that you had such a great european experience!

Ha ha~ That reminds me of our trip to Rome.. My son was a baby and we bathed him in the bidet!! And while in Europe, always carry change and tissue for the potties!!

This is so off the topic (kind of) but do you know what the first thought I had (without reading the words) of that first picture you had up there was? I thought, "Oh, they really do dress up in Paris. Look at that one lady. She looks fashionable." AND IT WAS YOU!!! I forgot that you had your long Julia Roberts hair when you were 18!

I also love how you start these "European entry" posts. When you say those things, "In case you're not aware of this form of flashback torture I put my readers through" it just makes me smile on the inside, and makes the reading fun.

Other than those two favorite things, this post was overwhelming. "She went to Paris by herself, at 18?! She had men whistling at her....how scary. I wonder if I could even be brave enough to do that at my current age (I plead the fifth)?"

Those are some of my thoughts....don't know if that's such a good idea to share....

My husband really wants to go to Paris. Me...not so much. I am not sure that I could handle all those steps. And lack of facilities.

I have a friend that went a few years ago - she has some amazing pictures from the top of Notre Dame...and she was telling me how she hardly fit up the staircase to go to the top.

I think the French would take issue with me...

I've always wanted to go to Paris, but maybe not so much after that journal entry. ;p

I spent a couple of weeks in Paris when I was 17. I had the best time, but the bathrooms freaked me out. I'll never forget using a bathroom at a museum and seeing some guy pee in a urinal as if I wasn't even there. That was an eye-opener! Other than that, I loved every thing about Paris.

Youre hair was pretty long to be washing it in a bidet??? Yuck! I guess I would rather do that than use the public bathroom. SCARRY! How do they flush? Did you have to hold your hair from going down the toilet?? The visual on that is pretty awesome! What an adventure!

So I wonder what it means to be half naked in a fountain with a jar of olives in your hand?

Great post, I love living thru the young you!

Your picture is so '90's. I think I see your signature studded black leather belt (you forgot it on your jacket entry)under that shirt around your waist. Paris sucks for the poor. I'm hoping I can go again in the future when I can get out of the slums of the city.

Oh stop! You are taking all the glamour out of Paris! Oh, the fun you must have had. You just don't get the same experience as an adult with kids and all. . .At least that is what I am assuming--I haven't actually gone to Paris!

Can you tell I am re-emerging from my hectic life to return to blogland? I have a lot of catching up to do.

You washed your hair in a BIDET???? ICK!!!! But I guess that was better than public showers with total strangers...

I love the pic of you in your long hair and shades...and the whole journal entry is like reading some romantic novel....
