In our last house, we had a couple of bushes, some climbing vines, a few potted topiaries, and bulbs in the spring---but that's about all the work I put into it since I knew we would be moving one day soon. And seven years later we did...
In this house I have discovered a new love for gardening and landscaping. It seems like such an extension of what's going on inside. Besides having a MUCH bigger yard than our last place, this home already had some defined beds and mature trees to work with. It was a challenge keeping what I wanted and ripping out the rest to make it all work with the English country garden feel I love so much, but I'm seeing it start to come together now. It will still take a few years for all the perennials to grow and fill up their spaces, but even the difference between last year and this has been amazing to look at when I compare photos!
Our front porch use to be all brick and it looked pretty gloomy. Plus I'm more of a backyard sitter-- so I ripped out all but a border of it to add something pretty to look at from my front window. Here was that spot in March, right after pruning:
My backyard had nothing but California orange poppies to work with, so it was pretty much a blank canvas. Here was the border back in March:
And the next two pictures are of the same spot now:
This is my front yard border that use to be nothing but scrubby rose bushes. Now it's got topiaries, Russian sage, and this coriopsis/purple salvia/ bellflower/ and "livewire" ornamental grass combination. It's going to be gorgeous when it all fills in.
And if any of you haven't checked out my other blog Evolution of a Home, you may not have seen the before of my house (September 2006--and this was after ripping the rose bushes out):

Amazing...I can't even manage to get a potted plant to last. I most definitly was not blessed with a green thumb. Not to mention I would never be able to put it all together the way you did.
i really like your landscaping...you put the pro's to shame! i really like the purple salvia...it is EVERYWHERE here. it is used in landsacping all over the city...and its pretty. i also like the red salvia which is not a "bush" per sae, but a flower of its own right. I planted a bunch of that at the retirement home and think that it looks really good too.
I noticed that you had Delphinium too. I love that till it all toples over cause it is too happy just getting big. It all looks so wonderful and I love the pink peony - something that wonderful, I am so glad that you shared.
THat picture of the daisies is beautiful! I love the soft corners. Your yard is coming in so lovely. Lots of hard work is paying off.
OH, you've done such good work!! I love the swelegant music.
Elena-
ha! ha! The "soft corner" is a big smear on the camera lens :)! I needed to clean it--but it turn out kind of pretty--like a filter! :)
Love the before and after pics! We're redoing our backyard right now, I can't wait to post the before and after pics so I can see what you (and everyone else) thinks!
Six months ago I went from one eighth of an acre to 2/3 an acre. . . with TREES (And mature bushes and tons of weeds) but the possiblities are endless and I LOVE gardening. I have posted several pics of my progress out there. The sad thing is it took me like seven years to complete my 1/8 acre!! Thanks for you comments today:)
Your gardens are lovely and the curb appeal is awesome!
Before and after shots are just amazing. I can't believe it's the same house. The red door is one of my favorite changes. I love the mound second, and then just the overall appearance of a well loved home is so inviting. Ahhh, you put me to shame as I profess to love yard work...
It seems to take forever!! Good job.
I am here! I'm back! I am so sorry. I have been missing you too and your fun, zany, personality, style and wit! So sorry to have been away so long. I have been super busy trying to be a super mom, super aunt, super wife, super homemaker, super photographer, super grad student, and super friend.
I am feeling super tired and my creativity level is super low... thanks for being a flower in my garden. i love to see you on my blog. your comments make me so happy!
I too love to garden! i wish there was a money tree so i could plant more flowers right now...someday.
how are you liking so you think you can dance? when i sit down to watch it i give you a silent shout out!! ;)
I am off to do more super stuff...like sleep. I promise to not be such a stranger. School is almost over...for the semester at least. ;)
How are you? How are things?
♡ I love flowers!!! There can never be too many! :)
I am so untalented...inside the house and out. We hired a landscaper to deal with all our beds...and I did a bunch of before and after shots. But we can never have enough flowers. We are going to do bulbs this fall. But...with your salvia and daisys...did you plant seeds or get them from a nursery? I have put down wildflower seeds and get nothing. And I love the California poppies. Mostly because I'm on the other side of the world and have never seen such except in blog pictures!
Beautiful! You've come a long way. I started on my garden when my kids were really little. I like nurturing something that is quiet and doesn't talk back. Although I can't say it doesn't challenge my authority! :-) The colors are so theraputic.
Wow...that all looks so beautiful! I'm inspired. I'm totally not a gardener, but for the first time ever in the history of me, I planted a garden this spring. I am actually planning stuff out for next year (this does not happen)...I do not have a green thumb...I'm REALLY good at growing very green leaves (in flower pots).
I am sooooo loving your before and afters. You did such a great job, girl!
Love the pictures of the flowers! How awesome!! I love the mix of daisies and poppies! I just planted some in our yard...just being patient to see what will POP up! :)
Great nurturing your green thumb...isn't it relaxing! :)
Beautiful yard! I love gardening, also. You've done a great job.
Nice job on your garden. I enjoyed checking it out.
Beautiful! I started reading your blog bit by bit a while ago and I guess I'm a lurker now... but I just wanted to tell you how inspiring I think you are. I feel so bad that have had to go through some really trying things this year and so I want you to know that even those of us that don't know you can see how wonderful you are!
Hey Jennifer,
Remember me (Karli's siamese twin)? I have to tell you - I was checking out your other blog yesterday, and I absolutely LOVE the renovations you made to your house. I really like bold colors and a clean design, and I pretty much want to cut your kitchen and dining room out and put it into my house! I can't wait til we buy a house someday so I can go crazy painting and decorating, but until then I just live vicariously through you and your darling pad... ( :
you know, I honestly haven't gotten past the four boys intro, but I do love to read about your energy. I think y'all did a fab job on the front lawn. I envy green thumbs. I guess it is just us and the monkeys that have this love of gardening. keep up teh good work. and boy oh boy, (and boy and boy) you have your hands full. hi there :)
Very beautiful. I love flowers and so wish that I could garden. I try and try and nothing grows. I have a black thumb as evidenced by all the weeds growing where the flowers and bushes should be.
Wow 50 hits from one source! I can't imagine how many hits you get in one day! I love the before/after photos. GREAT JOB! Beautiful!
Beautiful flowers! I love the work you've done in the yard and on the house. Looks really nice!
Kat--
the daisies I have to dig up and divide every year, so they have found several spots in my yard to "live". Mostly everything growing is a divided perennial from a friend, bought from a nursery, or was already growing. I just planted a wildflower patch from seed in my side yard. It's just starting to bloom now, so I'll have to take a picture soon. I think it's all about finding the right plants to grow in your climate. Hope that answered your question!
Jennifer,
I just got an award that I get to pass onto my favorite bloggers...TAG you're it! Come on over to pick it up :)
Here from SITS, (late). Love your flowers, and your garden. Great job on your home AND your blog!
I've got to say, I wish I could get into gardening. I think the results would be so rewarding!
I can totally relate in 'not wanting to put so much effort into a place you won't live in forever'. I had the same attitude about the rental we're in now, but then I decided....who says it has to be ugly while we live here? Even if it's temporary? I LOVE gardening and always have since I was a little girl (Thanks to my green thumb of a grandma). I planted a garden (which is very small since we don't have a large garden spot in our yard) and it's coming in quite nicely-- a mix or flowers and vegetables and herbs, which I mostly grew from seeds. Isn't a great feeling of accomplishmnet when you see something that YOU grew? I love it! Happy gardening! Maybe I'll post some pictures of my garden, my flowers have a ways before they'll bloom though.
That looks great!
while I love hor pretty the peony is. I still have a hard time with them. I grew up with then as the center piece on our table. The problem was, that my mom always forgot to get ALL the ants off of them! Grrrrrr
