So, this is kind of an odd post--but it is Monday and I'm sure we're all in an odd way anyway--so I'm just going to go with it.
Have you ever watched a TV show simply because you liked the house the characters lived in? Or is it just me? I have often found myself tuning into programs I don't otherwise care much for.....in order to admire the furniture. I had to use You Tube videos because google finally came up against something it couldn't find images of (gasp!). You only have to watch the first 10 seconds of each to see what I'm talkin' about, but THESE are among my all-time favorite TV houses. (and hey! guess what? I just published this and can now see that all my videos are out of order! I am too lazy to do any more cutting or pasting---so just watch and then re-arrange everything in your head. It'll be good mental aerobics!)
Mad About You : (which is actually Frasier)
I loved how they took a huge space and divided up into an office, a dining room, a sitting room, and a TV watching space. I based the decor of my first house on this show---lots of tan, cream and black, Arts and Crafts accents, and a black iron bed that I was forever changing the bedding on. And you have to admit that 13 years later, that buffalo check/toille mix loveseat they had is still amazing!
Will and Grace: (which is actually Mad About You)
I hated this show with a passion--but I couldn't get enough of the New York chic apartment. I think I have the tastes of a make-believe gay man, because if I moved into this place--there'd be very little I would change! My favorite things here would have to be the great leather banquette, the slipcovered chairs, and the photographer's lamp.
Friends: (which is actually Will and Grace)
I am not a big fan of pink or purple or turquoise---but somehow it all worked in this place! The best was just looking around each week to see what they'd changed. Seems there was always something new hanging on the wall, or new flowers in the vase, or a new throw and pillows on the couch. I think its set designers must have loved it as much as their own homes! And who didn't think about hanging a little frame around their peep hole after watching this show?
Finally, Frasier: (which is actually Friends, which means I didn't even get ONE right!)
I think this show was on for almost 10 years and that apartment of his looked as timeless on the last episode as it did on the first....and they never changed a thing. Proves you can't go wrong with neutral colors, texture instead of pattern, classic lines, and great art. And though I'm a happy suburbanite---I would almost move to the city for that view of Seattle!
On the same note, there were also shows that were great but were hard for me to watch because their TV homes really bothered me. Like Everybody Loves Raymond. That house had way too much oak, yucky wallpaper that didn't match with anything, and kids toys piled up needlessly everywhere. I think it was suppose to represent "real life"---but, that's kind of why I watch TV---to ESCAPE real life! Show me unattainable beauty people! Actually, that show was funny enough that I learned to turn a blind eye and appreciate the benefits of plastic slipcovers on a couch.
I guess if my life were a sitcom, I would be living in an impeccably styled loft in a big city somewhere..... and also there would have been a laugh track and clapping running throughout this whole post making it seem much wittier and clever-er than it was :)!
Do you have any favorite TV houses?.....or any that you hate?

It was Everybody Loves Raymond that made me fall in love with the doors I picked out for my new house! I'm not sure the house in that show as a whole is anything to write home about...but I love the doors!
I loved the Cosby Show's house, it seemed so big with the mysterious upstairs and all. And what was with his office? I always thought it was in the basement. I absolutely despised Mama's Family. I never could even make it through one whole episode. Simply obnoxious and tacky!
I halve always coveted the friends loft so bad... it seemed so cozy, and I have tried to talk Jeff into the picture frame idea, but he just isn't havin' it. ;)
I never put a whole lot of thought into houses I saw on shows. Now I wont be able to watch a show without thinking about it though.
i loved the friends houses as well...i LOVE, love, LOVE the dresser that they put the TV on...I really want something like that still for my own home.
if there was a TV house that was unattainable would be the Desperate Housewives homes (show that yes, i will not watch for the pure sexuality of it) they are gorgeous (although the one on brothers & sisters is pretty amazing as well...another show that i don't watch but have seen as i flip channels)
I loved "Mad about you!" But like Amanda...I never really thought about the decor. Except when it was awful. Like Frasier's dad's chair. How many of us have one of those? Or that afghan that covered the back of Roseanne's couch? Or even the big Fork and Spoon. My parents had those! Or...even on That 70's...always in the background, that macrame owl? My mom made one of those, too...
haha... we must have similar tastes... as soon as I read the intro to your post, into my head immediately popped "Mad About You"! and "Will & Grace"! oh, to have a hardwood loft divided up into sections with bookcases lining at least two of the walls...
I know this isn't a TV house, but I absolutely, completely love Mandy Moore's apartment in "Because I Said So." The movie itself is good (worth watching once), but I've watched it about 7 times just to drool over the adorable pad. Same with the movie "Something New"... I've watched it a few times, not because it's a cinematic masterpiece, but because I love her little home.
I thought I was the only one who did this! ( :
I always LOVED the house in Father of the Bride. I loved everything about it, inside and out.
I drive my husband crazy with my "Did you see that door?" and, "Would you look at that moulding?" during every show/movie that we watch!
I loved "Mad About you". I love the houses on DH and I LOVE LOVE LOVE the house on "Brothers and Sisters". I also watched the movie "Somethings Gotta Give" over and over, because I must. have. that. house.
It's good to hear I am not alone in my obsession!.
I totally agree about the 'Everybody Loves Raymond' house decor. I hated that mismatched, "country",flower-y wallpaper, and ALL those gazillion toys stacked up in the corner in full view of guests. I hate clutter and am a streamlined kind of girl when it comes to decor.
I prefer modern and classic pieces, although right now my home looks like a garage sale-- due to lots of hand me downs. SOMEDAY though they will be glamorous and modern chic! I like the 'Will and Grace' apartment...I can't think of any others I love off the top of my head.
since we crossed into movie houses--I had a bunch of those I loved too :)! Father of the Bride is one for sure. There was also a Helen Hunt/Mel Gibson movie called "What Women Want" where I LOVED his place. And Amber--I just watched "Because I said so" last weekend and I loved her house too---there was orange in it! Also, both the houses on the movie "The Holiday"--I'd take the LA mansion OR the cozy little English cottage!
And Shannon--
You're right! Raymond and Deborah DID have good doors ;)!
I love the Father of the Bride house, too!! And also Growing Pains when I was a kid. I thought they were so rich. I saw the Pilot again last year and the little wooden truck on the bookshelf in the kitchen brought back memories of my childhood. What?
The Brady house depresses me. The Golden Girls house makes me think of playdoh and Tuesday mornings in the summertime. The Fresh Prince kitchen made me want to grow up and have one. (a kitchen, not a prince). And the Friends apartment just makes me happy.
Great post.
You are so funny! We liked the Mad About You bed so much...my husband tracked down the designer and had one made...he even wrote "mad about you" on it :) I don't usually watch much of The Bachelor or Bachelorette shows...but when I have seen them...OMG, those homes are absolutely gorgeous! I always loved The Brady Bunch's house growing up, thought they were so rich!...I wanted TWO stairways sooo bad...thought it was sooo cool :) (As a side, our new house we are in the process of building has two...YEAH!) Maybe I could fly you to OK for some decorating services??!! I need lots of help!
I am laughing so hard right now because I thought that I was the only one who would simetimes pay more attention to the moulding, chair rail, kitchen etc in a movie than the actual movie it self. I always liked the house in the Meg Ryan movie "When a man loves a woman." It made me happy when I noticed that the dressar in their bedroom was the same one that I own :) There was a movie with Julia Roberts and ?? that had Julia playing the new girlfriend and the ex wife was dying of cancer. The ex wife had a front porch house ( thats what I call the cozy houses on movies!)that was charimng and evoked a certain feelilng of family along with the smell of home baking and hot chocolate...I could go on and on but no, you are not the only one who stares at the houses on movies and t.v!
What a thought provoking blog. I have to agree that I love the house in "Father of the Bride" too.
I loved watching the clips, those were all great shows.
TV can make you very discontent that is for sure or thankful for the life you have!
I loved Lucy and Ricky's apartment on "I Love Lucy"!!

lifewiththequeens.blogspot.com
I always loved the house on Silver Spoons with the train and video games in the livingroom.
I love to see on TV shows when people have the same stuff as I do!! One short'lived show with Andrew Dice Clay and had the same awful diningroom chairs we did!! And I have see some of our corningware serving dishes on various shows.
Oh I don't care about their places......I miss Will and Grace! That was SO funny. I love that show.
♡ I love friends! It's my favorite! :)
I like the Friends pad because it is so eclectic. I hated Raymond's house for the same reasons you did...all those toys made me sick...I'm trying to think what shows I actually watch or watched...that you haven't mentioned...Might need to think on it...
I'm partial to the Walton's. For an old home they sure had a great 'great room'. I loved the big dining room table. All of the wood floors and the PORCH. I want it all. We pay BIG, BIG money now to get that look. :) AWESOME question!!!!!!!
ok.... I must be doing something wrong!!!
How in the world do you have time for TV??? I don't even remember how to turn on the TV it's been so long...
That's pretty impressive...
Man, I just made two comments, and erased them both. I fear I'm too complicated, too long winded, and it's hard to explain....so I'll now leave you very confused by my condensed comment for sure.
1) I used to give decorating not a second thought.
2) I learned you can love your house, and enjoy it, not just exist there. It can be an oasis. I always think now, "what do I want this space to be? How do I want it to feel?" I'm still figuring myself out.
3) You taught me to fill your house with things you love...and now I do it, and I love it, but I've only made it as far as one wall in our entire house, and a few other choice decorations.
4) I thought of you today. "What would Jennifer think of my bedroom that has quilts, mismatched blankets that were given to me, bookshelves and a computer desk, and no window treatments?" She would immediately think of all the things she would do with the space, and enjoy it trememdously!
In short, no, I've never really looked at homes on T.V. for their decorations because I've never really given my own home decor much thought....until just recently.
Did I say this was going to be the condensed version? Anyway, decorating has just recently become fun. It's funny to hear how people think of decorations all of the time, even while watching T.V. I guess I'm the odd one out on this one!
I enjoy a lot of movie sets. As far as TV goes, I love seeing Paula Deen's house and wish I could get a tour. Love that Southern style!
Me too! Me too! I wanted the silver spoons house so that I could ride around on that train. I also loved the yellow house from the old disney movie Summer Magic with Hayley Mills - I have to admit I'd also go for the treehouse in Swiss Family Robinson!
I could be showing my age here, but I LOVE LOVE LOVE Mary TYler Moore's Tudor Apt. in Minneapolis. And Rhoda's place once she moved back to New York and married Joe. I had a big wooden initial letter and beads and a peacock chair, but could never tie the head scarf the way Rhoda did.
MTM anyone? I also think that show was the single most funny show on TV ever.
Seriously? Are you asking me who she is? First of all- did you or your parents have TV in Idaho in the 70's? Did you have cable in the 80's to watch Nick at Night?
Yer joshin' me, right?
Father of the Bride house.
Love it.
Want to live in it.
Or that house in that movie with Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton where he dates her daughter and then her. Yeah, basically any pretend house where Diane Keaton lives.
Oh, and that movie with the house with Dennis Quaid and Scarlett Johansen {?} is the daughter and she dates here dad's young boss? What movie is that? Love that house. I only watch movies for houses.
And, Meg's apartment in you've got mail.
Hate Tom's houseboat thing.
I always liked the Friends apartment, you're right. It just was a comfortable/roomy/fun place. Another show that I enjoyed the house of was 7th Heaven, mainly because it was so big and I wanted to be a part of a big family.
YES! I do this ALL THE TIME! I want to live in the Gilmore house on Gilmore Girls. Please?
And I totally want to live (by myself, mind you) in Carrie's apartment in Sex & the City...I would totally be a writer (and a good one) if I lived there (by myself).
And I always do this in movies too...the one that comes to mind right off the bat is Julia Robert's house in Sleeping with the Enemy. And in What Lies Beneath. Yeah. Anything beachy. Or farmhouse-y. Please?
There are SO MANY.
Well, that was fun! And yes...I did want to live in the Friend's apartment and Everybody Loves Raymond's house IS way too real life. (but that's why *I* love it too). :)
